Saint Martin de Porres High School is seeking a dynamic, energetic, and self-driven College Counselor to be part of an innovative college-prep and career readiness high school experience. 

OUR ORGANIZATION 

Saint Martin de Porres High School is part of the Cristo Rey Network of Catholic schools designed exclusively for students of modest means.  Our competitive edge is our Corporate Work study program, which allows students to gain real world work experience while receiving a college preparatory education.  Eighty percent of our students will be the first in their extended families to go to college.  Our rigorous curriculum, which includes students working in a corporate environment, was designed specifically for our school by a committee of prestigious educational leaders.  Saint Martin was founded in 2004, we are chartered by the state of Ohio and accredited through the Ohio Catholic Schools Accrediting Association.  Our mission of College and Career Readiness is centered around five pillars: Work, Study, Serve, Lead, and Pray.  

POSITION SUMMARY

12-month (year-round) position with hours based on school schedule and department needs.

As a college-preparatory school, Saint Martin de Porres aims to ensure that each of our scholars attends a four-year or two-year program directly upon graduation from high school. The College Counselor will collaborate with the College Counseling and Post-Secondary Success team to support and prepare our scholars for college. In addition, the College Counselor should be ready to work closely with PowerSchool and Scoir and integrate them into the workflow of the department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

This is a general representation of the key duties and responsibilities required of this position. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Co-facilitate 9th- 12th grade college readiness courses
  • Manage a College Counseling caseload of approximately 80-90 Juniors and Seniors, including writing and managing the collection of letters of recommendation
  • Guide Seniors through all aspects of the college, financial aid (including FAFSA & CSS), and scholarship application processes.
  • Ensure students take advantage of unique opportunities made available to students with modest economic means in the college search and application process (i.e., fee waivers, fly-­‐in visits, university partner programs, and scholarships)
  • Identify summer programs and internships, and guide 9th- 11th grade students through the application process.
  • Arrange and coordinate college visits.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development focused on college advising and access, including participation in opportunities provided by the Cristo Rey Network.
  • Develop and maintain a robust network of college admission professionals through regular communication and visits
  • Assist with implementing our “Summer Melt” program to ensure our graduates directly enroll in college.
  • Build and celebrate a school-­‐wide college-­‐going culture (i.e., publicly posting college acceptances, on-­‐site admissions days, planning and leading senior acceptance assemblies, and other school-­‐wide traditions)
  • Adapt to changes in responsibilities positively, be receptive to new ways of completing tasks, and be flexible in carrying out assignments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of College Advising & Post-Secondary Success.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree and 1-2+ years of experience in higher education or college admission counseling.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Higher Education, College Admission Counseling, or a related field required
     

EXPERIENCE & COMMITMENT

  • Experience working in an urban environment with high school-aged students and/or experience working with college students.
  • Strong knowledge of the college admissions process, financial aid, and retention in higher education.
  • Strong interest in continuing education.
  • Occasional evenings and weekends as needed.

  • Must be personable, flexible, and persistent.
  • Ability to work with school technology (use of academic software, Microsoft Office, social media, etc.)
  • Strong analytical and computer skills; ability to track and report data points as needed
