Economic Development Project Development Intern

The Virginia Beach Department of Economic Development is committed to fostering a strong, vibrant, and diverse economy by supporting small businesses, revitalizing commercial corridors, and attracting investment. As part of these efforts, we administer the Facade Improvement Grant Program, which assists local businesses in enhancing the visual appeal of their properties to encourage economic revitalization. We are currently seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Project Development Intern to support our Project Development Team with the administration and evaluation of this impactful program.

Required Education: Candidates seeking a degree, preferably a junior. Any major will be considered; however, students seeking a degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Political Science, Economic Development, Business Administration, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, or related fields are preferred.

Duties:

  • Assist with the coordination, processing, and tracking of applications for the Facade Improvement Grant Program.
  • Conduct field assessments and before/after documentation of eligible business properties.
  • Support program marketing efforts, including developing outreach materials and assisting with stakeholder communications.
  • Prepare case files, presentation materials, and project reports for internal review and public meetings.
  • Assist with research on best practices and benchmarking data from comparable municipal grant programs.
  • Help maintain digital files and records in alignment with records retention standards.
  • Assist in the creation of maps using ArcGIS and/or other applicable software.
  • Participate in site visits, applicant consultations, and project development planning meetings.
  • Support Economic Development staff on other revitalization projects as needed.

Application Deadline: Open until filled, applications will be sent to the hiring manager on a weekly basis with the first batch being sent Friday May 2nd 2025.

Expected Schedule & Duration: June 2025 - August 2025. Candidates will work Monday through Friday 8 AM to 5 PM with flexibility within these hours. Part time work would also be acceptable.
