Internship Opportunity -- South Hill Police Department
The South Hill Police Department Internship Program provides undergraduate students with a unique opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in law enforcement operations. Participants will learn about various policing areas, including crime prevention, investigations, community engagement, and law enforcement technology.
Internship Duration: Summer Semester (May - August)
Internship Responsibilities:
- Administrative Support: Assist with administrative tasks such as data entry, filing reports, managing records, and supporting day-to-day operations.
- Community Outreach: Engage in community safety programs, public events, and initiatives aimed at crime prevention and building stronger relationships within the community.
- Research and Analysis: Support research efforts related to policing strategies, assist in data gathering for investigations, and analyze crime trends.
- Ride-Along Opportunities: Interns may have the chance to ride along with officers during patrols to witness police work firsthand.
- National Night Out: Interns will participate in this nationwide event, held on the first Tuesday of August, designed to strengthen community bonds through crime prevention and neighborhood activities. Interns will help facilitate events and promote safety awareness.
Requirements:
- Enrollment: Must be enrolled in a college or university program related to criminal justice, law enforcement, or a similar field.
- Skills: Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a demonstrated interest in law enforcement.
- Type: Undergraduate College Major Preference: Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Analytics, Media Relations, or related fields
Eligibility Standards:
- Academic Status: Completed at least one semester of college (preferably earning 3-15 credit hours for the internship).
- GPA Requirement: Minimum GPA of 2.5. An official college transcript is required.
- Commitment to Law Enforcement: Preference given to students with a demonstrated interest or commitment to a career in law enforcement.
- Criminal History: Applicants should have no felony convictions or serious misdemeanors. Drug use will be evaluated based on frequency and type.
- Essential Job Functions: Must have the ability to perform essential internship functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
Physical Demands:
- The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting objects weighing in excess of 74 pounds, moving in areas of difficult or dangerous access.
- The work environment involves extremely high risks with exposure to potentially life-threatening situations or unusual environmental stress which requires a full range of safety and other precautions, but in some cases, these precautions cannot prevent injury, illness, or possibly death.

- Gain insight into the operations and structure of law enforcement agencies.
- Develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills in real-world law enforcement contexts.
- Understand the ethical and legal standards that guide police work.
