Community Engagement Manager - Clean Ports Program
The Community Engagement Manager will have a particular focus on overseeing community engagement activities, working on engagement activities including the implementation of the Near Port Community Steering Committee in support of Climate and Air Quality Planning (CAQP) activities for the Salt Lake City Intermodal Terminal (SLCIT) funded through the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Clean Ports Program (CPP).
This is a time-limited position contingent on and for the duration of the Clean Ports Program (CPP) Climate and Air Quality Planning (CAQP) activities for the Salt Lake Inland Port Clean Air Plan (SLIPCAP) project, estimated to be approximately three years. This position offers in-person and telework options.
This position reports directly to the Marketing & Communications Director.
About Clean Ports
On February 28, 2024, the EPA announced the CPP grant competitions. $3 billion in funding is available from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to fund zero-emission (ZE) port equipment and infrastructure, as well as climate and air quality planning at U.S. ports.
The Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA) has been awarded approximately $2.4 million dollars to complete the following CAQP activities:
- Develop a baseline emissions inventory for vehicles/equipment operating at the SLCIT
- Assess diesel emission reduction strategies
- Launch a formal process to get input from near-port communities and other stakeholders on CAQP activities
- Engage SLCIT workers on CAQP activities
- To include a ZE workforce impact assessment
- Prepare and publish documents summarizing the result of CAQP activities
Principal Duties
- Foster working relationships with near-port community members residing near the Salt Lake City Intermodal Terminal on the west side of Salt Lake City.
- Develop an application/solicitation process for officials, nonprofits, community organizations, community leaders, and related near-port community members to become members of a Near-Port Community Steering Committee.
- Launch a formal process to get input from the Near-Port Community Steering Committee on Climate and Air Quality Planning activities.
- Effectively organize and manage Near-Port Steering Committee meetings and support.
- Coordinate mitigation stipends and childcare/dependent care stipends for low-income community members to participate in the Near Port Community Steering Committee.
- Facilitate tabling, workshops, forums, and other public outreach events to present the planned Climate and Air Quality Planning project and collect input, share results, and discuss potential benefits (e.g., health benefits, new job/employment opportunities, etc) with near-port community members.
- Coordinate with Marketing & Communication Director to publicize information about Climate and Air Quality activities and Near-Port Community Steering Committee events.
- Provide status reports regarding community engagement and initiative efforts to external and internal stakeholders.
- Effectively communicate with all involved parties.
Requirements
Ideal Candidate
- Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing, or a similar field
- Background in public information, community engagement, and media with an understanding of government and community member participation concepts
- Experience in media or public relations, public communications, or marketing
- Professional experience in community outreach, engagement, public policy, or project management
- Strong understanding of project management fundamentals to meet project goals and timelines
- Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills.
- The ability to coordinate multiple complex activities or tasks of people, groups and/or organizations.
- Exhibits professional behavior and provides exceptional customer service.
- Strong desire to learn new skills.
- Ability to resolve conflict quickly and appropriately.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Ability to produce quality work and adhere to deadlines.

Pay
$25-$35 per hour (DOE)
