Art Lab Instructor for the Jazz Lab Summer Experience

Job Overview:
Join us for a unique opportunity to work with youth in a dynamic arts environment. As a Lab Instructor for the Jazz Lab™ Summer Experience, you will guide students in the creation of abstract art in a peaceful, collaborative space, accompanied by an improvisational jazz soundscape. With a focus on creativity and exploration, you’ll inspire young artists to engage with a wide range of materials while fostering a calm and open environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the program team on supply selection to ensure a diverse and engaging range of materials.
  • Maintain a clean and inviting creative space.
  • Lead three 55-minute art labs daily, serving approximately 25 students per session.
  • Supervise and mentor a dedicated student lab assistant; delegate tasks as needed and model positive leadership.
  • Coordinate with volunteers to ensure a smooth, welcoming, and safe environment for all participants.
  • Foster a calm, collaborative atmosphere where students feel free to explore, take creative risks, and express themselves.
  • Guide students in abstract, improvisational art-making, using sound, materials, and movement as creative prompts.
  • Facilitate light, age-appropriate conversations around the power of creative expression and the role of jazz in artistic exploration.
  • Introduce and explain the connection between music, mood, and mark-making, encouraging students to observe, listen, and respond.
  • Ensure each participant receives a stamp in their Jazz Lab™ Passport upon completion of the session.
  • Maintain awareness of student safety, inclusion, and engagement throughout each session.
  • Oversee resetting the space between labs to keep energy fresh and materials ready.

Qualifications:

  • College Junior or Senior with a background in Art or related field.
  • Passion for arts education and fostering creative expression.
  • Ability to manage and engage large groups of students in a structured yet creative setting.
  • Experience with or a strong interest in improvisational music and abstract art-making.
