The work you'll do is more than just a job.

At the State of Minnesota, employees play a critical role in developing policies, providing essential services, and working to improve the well-being and quality of life for all Minnesotans. The State of Minnesota is committed to equity and inclusion, and invests in employees by providing benefits, support resources, and training and development opportunities.

Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB) is seeking a Budget Intern to complete budget-related activities following the conclusion of the legislative session. This is an exciting opportunity for those passionate about public service and fiscal responsibility to assist in Capital Budget development. It is MMB’s goal to introduce the Intern to the Capital Budget process and work in the public sector and develop a pipeline for future full-time, permanent positions at MMB. This is a full-time position lasting from early June through mid-August.

Job duties for this position include:

  • Providing logistical support for capital bonding tours, such as building agendas, preparing budget proposal summary materials, confirming appointments, and determining transportation needs
  • Facilitating customer feedback sessions to learn about their experiences working in and with state systems; synthesizing information for continuous improvement efforts
  • Developing communications and promotions related to the capital budget
  • Reviewing capital budget proposals for accuracy and completeness
  • Attending trainings and meetings

Assignments will be tailored to organizational needs and the selected Intern’s interests. All activities will have practical application for managers and policymakers in state government.

This position will be required to work onsite two (2) to three (3) days per week, depending on business needs and telework schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled* in an undergraduate (or higher) program in the fields of public policy, public administration, political science, business administration, finance, economics, journalism, law, or another relevant field.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (or similar application) and familiarity of other Microsoft products
  • Communication skills sufficient to convey complex and/or sensitive information to a variety of audiences
  • Ability to appreciate diversity and a strong commitment to a respectful and inclusive work environment.

In addition, a cover letter is required to be considered for this position. The cover letter should include your interest in the position and how your experiences meet the minimum and preferred qualifications of this position.

*Upon initial appointment, the student must be enrolled in an educational program or planning to enroll within three months. While students may be “off” for the summer or for one semester/quarter and remain employed as student workers, such absences cannot exceed one semester/quarter in a year. If enrolled at a credit-granting institution, the student must be carrying at least six semester (nine quarter) credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institution, or one that only offers one credit per class, the student must be taking at least two classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit load will be treated as a semester/quarter off.

Preferred Qualifications

MMB values diverse perspectives and encourages all qualified candidates to apply, even if they do not meet 100% of the preferred qualifications. Your unique skills and background might be just what we need!

  • Completion of at least two years’ worth of credits towards a relevant degree
  • Experience performing administrative support duties related to budget or policy review, such as preparing data or reports, drafting or editing policy language, reconciling accounts, maintaining financial records, or tracking expenses
  • Strong interest in public service, government administration, and/or budget preparation and development

Additional Requirements

Minnesota Management and Budget will conduct reference checks to verify job-related credentials and a criminal background check prior to appointment. A criminal history does not automatically disqualify candidates, and each case will be reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and in alignment with fair and equitable hiring practices.

Additionally, students will be required to produce a current transcript to prove enrollment as defined in the minimum qualification section above and Administrative Procedure 8.1.
