The Vermilion Local School District seeks an enthusiastic leader to fill the important position of Vermilion High School Principal. The right candidate will build relationships with students, staff and community, provide visionary leadership, and employ instructional and organizational leadership skills to enhance the school’s teaching and learning environment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 224 work days
Purpose Statement: Administers and leads all aspects of the high school program. Is responsible for leadership in student achievement, staff operations and staff excellence as well as day-to-day oversight of the school budget, the various components of an effective high school program including extracurricular and the facility. Maintains the health and safety of all students and staff. Supervises and evaluates staff.
Public relations is the job of everyone connected with the school. The Board of Education, Superintendent, Principal, teachers, secretaries, custodians, bus drivers and the students all help to form the impression the school makes on the community. The principal should be particularly alert to this fact and should coordinate the staff and student body toward a positive image of the school in the minds of the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Possess a Master’s Degree in Education, Education Administration or related field.
2. Five (5) years of teaching experience. Administrative experience preferred.
3. Possess a successful work history.
4. Able to use and understand current educational technology.
5. Willing to explore instructional strategies to meet changing needs of students.
6. Must possess good management skills.
7. Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
8. Possess knowledge of or experience with high school curriculum, date analysis, performance assessment and school improvement planning.
9. Meet or be willing to meet the State school administrator’s continuing education requirement.
10. Must pass the BCI/FBI background check.
Desirable Qualifications:
1. Experience with master schedule or school restructuring.
2. Successful experience as a secondary principal or assistant principal.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. The principal will comply with Ohio law, as well as all policies of the Vermilion Board of Education and administrative guidelines established by the Superintendent.
2. Carry out a program of education in accordance with the philosophy of the school.
3. Keep abreast with the latest and best practices of education. Should serve as a leader whenever it is deemed necessary to revise the curriculum of the school. Require that teachers follow the aims, objectives and basic course of study which was developed under the Principal’s leadership4. The principal shall endeavor to create an atmosphere of mutual respect between her/him and other school groups.
4. The principal is responsible for the observation and evaluation of all license and non-licensed employees assigned to his/her building. Principals will follow the established procedures found in the negotiated agreements between the Vermilion Teachers Association and Ohio Association of Public-School Employees and the Vermilion Local School District Board of Education.
5. The principal will follow the Ohio Revised Code in the observation and evaluation of all employees.
6. Directs a balance program of extra-curricular activities; accesses need for activities, participates in local and state organizations in order to regulate the program.
7. The principal shall be responsible for the overall regulations in matters of discipline.
8. Oversees the professional development of teachers and staff.
9. Supervises, monitors, and coaches staff in the building with a focus on continuous improvement.
10. Promotes a positive tone for collaborative school/community relations by articulating the mission, seeing community support, and fostering rapport with stakeholders.
11. Confers with parents and staff to discuss educational activities, policies and student behavioral or learning issues.
12. Promotes school spirit.
Specific Duties:
1. Supervises the organization of the school program, including the Workforce Development Program.
2. Plans faculty and staff meetings.
3. Supervises preparation of pupil personnel records.
4. Directs the work of the school office.
5. Assists in counseling students; conducts parent conferences regarding matters of special importance, or when requested by the teachers.
6. Prepares the calendar of high school activities.
7. Assists teachers through classroom supervision.
8. Administers Student Activity Accounts and fundraising requests; sends reports to the Superintendent or Treasurer as required by policy.
9. Supervises during lunch periods; assigns personnel to assist.
10. Administers preparation of the student and teacher handbooks.
11. Handles all correspondence relating to matters of general importance regarding the welfare of the school.
12. Makes official reports to the Ohio Department of Education as required.
13. Assists in the development of a professional library for teachers.
14. Is responsible for fire and safety drills as required by Ohio law.
15. Supervises the maintenance of student cumulative records, health records, and grades.
16. Responsible for review of students and employee accident reports and submission to the Superintendent.
17. Participates in local community activities.
18. Other duties as from time to time shall be assigned by the Superintendent.
19. The Principal shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substances in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the district.
Evaluation: Performance of this position and its responsibilities will be evaluated at least annually by the Superintendent of Schools.
