Food Systems Internship

Position Description

The Pitney Meadows Food Systems Internship offers candidates an opportunity to develop or build upon farm-to-table, food system, and community-building skills while curating a Farm Stand environment that centers the stories of our farm and our farming partners. This position supports the Farm Manager and our Community Farm Team in all aspects of our Farm Stand program, including wash/pack, stocking, communications, on-farm public engagement, and farmer relations.


 

Responsibilities

  • Enhance the Farm Stand as a place of first engagement with the community, highlighting the importance of local agriculture and conveying the mission and scope of the organization.
  • Perform day-to-day tasks involved with Farm Stand stocking, displays, and inventory management. Maintain Farm Stand cleanliness and signage.
  • Interface daily with the Farm production team to assess produce sales, upcoming harvesting, and pack/display needs.
  • Perform washing and packing of crops for distribution for donations, Farm Stand, CSA members, and wholesale accounts.
  • Assist with Wash/Pack area maintenance and record keeping.
  • Maintenance and safe use of tools and equipment, including golf carts, generators, appliances, power tools, and hand tools.
  • Support and coordinate with all of Pitney Meadows’ organizational programs, including education, community gardens, events, maintenance, and special projects as needed.


 

Qualifications

  • Positive & generous attitude towards teamwork
  • Focused time management skills, efficiency, a sense of urgency, and consistent attention to detail. 
  • Strong work ethic with a positive and motivated attitude in all weather conditions. 
  • Ability to perform moderately strenuous labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs and standing for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge and experience with farming and sustainable, organic growing practices are preferred, though not required. 
  • Understanding and interest in the mission of Pitney Meadows Community Farm, and willingness to share that with visitors to the farm.


 

Terms and Compensation

  • This internship is a seasonal position spanning from late May to September. 
  • The intern is expected to work 20-25 hours per week, with the exact amount varying based on an agreement between the intern and manager. 
  • This job requires a willingness to work some weekends and flexibility in hours as they can vary from week-to-week. 
  • The intern will be compensated for their summer work with an hourly wage of $15.50/hr or can be a for-credit internship.
