Computer Camp Counselor

We are looking for counselors to help teach campers how to program near Erie Pennsylvania.

You would be responsible for instructing 1-2 campers aged 8-15 on a particular topic. The usual intermediate-advanced topic list includes Python, HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Java, or Robotics/Hardware. Beginner campers start either with simple logic programs such as Lightbot/Alice/Scratch or Python (depending on their math level). Campers show up to Camp on Sunday afternoon and stay for one or two weeks until their parents retrieve them on Saturday. We have campers only during instruction hours which account for up to 6 hours out of the day (no bed-wetting or other typical camp "responsibilities" for us). The rest of our time is spent hanging out, playing games, watching movies, and doing various Camp activities (rock climbing, waterfront activities, frisbee, etc). Weekends are mostly free of any staff responsibilities except for check-in/out and a few meetings. Camp Fitch is located west of Erie PA directly on Lake Erie.

Simple Java, Python, and JavaScript are our go-to's. For Python we use a course called Program Arcade Games that has proven quite popular. Java and JavaScript generally depend on the person teaching. We have some good resources in our internal wiki for puzzles, topic progression, and other such tidbits. Kids usually don't make crazy progress each week. The general guidance we give staff is to stay at least a day ahead of their campers. Our counselors all help each other out during the day. Especially those who have never been to camp before.

Base pay is $510/week. You would be housed in a shared lodge with the Tech staff. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are served family style in the dining hall but we usually go off-site a few times each week. You are responsible for your transportation to/from camp (airport transit can be arranged from ERI, CLE, or PIT). PA law requires all childcare employees to undergo a background check and fingerprinting prior to arrival (valid for 5 years).
