Environmental Services Intern

ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES INTERN – COLORADO DESERT DISTRICT / COLORADO DESERT DISTRICT OFFICE


The reporting location for this position is Colorado Desert District Office in Borrego Springs, California. This position will work under the close direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist.

The Job Duties include species monitoring, field surveys team member on District Natural Resource Program field surveys and other natural resource project operations. Record Keeping, data management, research accurate record-keeping, including data input and QA/QC is required for all projects. Includes budgeting, timekeeping, participating and documenting safety meetings, upkeep of certifications, transcribing historical data from archives, and note-taking during meetings. Natural Resource Restoration Participation in physical restoration efforts in all park units, conducting resource management, project monitoring, invasive species control, and habitat restoration. District Outreach and Cross-Program Interaction Includes participation in other State Park-led outreach programs: Visitor Center “Junior Ranger” program, high-school internship program, campfire programs, Anza-Borrego Foundation outreach, and other partnership programs as assigned goals, and ensure State Park goals and targets are being met by contractors and other field crews. Communication of ongoing field goals and needs to District Environmental Scientist Lead and Senior Environmental Scientist required.

 

The Environmental Services Intern classification is a non-testing classification. Appointments to this class are made under temporary authority (TAU) and are limited to no more than nine months of full-time equivalent work. No permanent appointments will be made. The time a person can serve in a temporary appointment must not exceed 9 months in 12-consecutive months or 189 days of work. When serving in a TAU appointment, the incumbent does not acquire probationary or permanent status or rights.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

 

This position requires a valid Class C driver’s license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver’s license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver’s license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.

Working Conditions

All field work occurs in remote and often extreme conditions, with maximum temperatures of 110°F (avian surveys) to 115°F (FTHL surveys). Must be able to start before dawn each morning, drive a 4WD vehicle in off-road conditions to remote sites, be able to work with a partner in remote sites, and hike off-trail in rugged terrain carrying moderate loads (up to 25 pounds) for several hours. This position may require hiking of up to 8 miles on some surveys. Proficiencies in ArcGIS (Survey123, Field Maps, ArcGIS Pro/Online) and Microsoft Office Suite preferred. Possession of a basic (Class C) drivers’ license is required.
