NEWS REPORTER
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is a general assignment local news reporter position in a small and dynamic newsroom. Raven Radio is a vibrant community radio station located in Sitka, Alaska – an ~8,000 person island community in Southeast Alaska. Learn more about Sitka and KCAW here.
This is a full time, permanent, and exempt position. Salary is based on a 40 hour work week and starts at $55,000 depending on experience, plus competitive benefits. KCAW is an equal opportunity employer.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
● Research, write, and produce news and feature stories.
● Host news broadcasts, special events, assembly meetings, and live news coverage.
● Beat and assignment reporting, which may include:
○ Municipal government and election coverage
○ Schools and education
○ Public safety
○ Tribal, state, and federal government
○ Fisheries
● Prepare stories and photography for digital delivery and distribution
● Maintain news archives and story files.
● Assist the training and mentoring of news interns and volunteers.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
● 2-3 years of experience as a reporter (or journalism degree + 1 year experience)
● Demonstrated skills in journalism, including excellent writing, news interviewing
● Knowledge of the legal and ethical aspects of news reporting.
● Ability to work under deadline pressure and with a minimum of supervision.
● Ability to work a flexible schedule.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
● Radio or other audio production experience
● Knowledge of Alaska and local issues, interests, and trends
● Photography and/or videography skills
