Under the general supervision of the Director of Technical Staff and the Chair of the Environmental Science (ENVS) Department, the Environmental Science Laboratory Coordinator oversees the activities related to delivering the laboratory curriculum in the Department of Environmental Science.

Full Job Description:

Job Responsibilities

• Independently manage the organization and cleanliness of the Environmental Science Department's teaching labs and prep spaces.

• Operate, conduct routine maintenance, and train others in the use of lab equipment and instrumentation within the ENVS lab/field curriculum.

• Coordinate third-party servicing of department instruments.

• Manage the department's laboratory operating budget.

• Coordinate the submission of purchase requisitions for laboratory supplies used in ENVS and the Masters in Environmental Management (MSEM) teaching and departmental research labs.

• Preparation, setup, and takedown of weekly lab exercises for various courses within the ENVS and MSEM lab/field curriculum.

• Manage an inventory of chemicals, general supplies, laboratory/field equipment (including shared camping supplies), and computational resources used in ENVS and MSEM lab/field curriculum.

• Maintain a library of standard operating procedures, prep notes, and datasheets for use within the ENVS and MSEM lab/field curriculum.

• Coordinate the timely disposal of hazardous materials generated by educational laboratories.

• Hire, train, supervise, and mentor student workers to assist in the duties outlined above.

• Collaborate with ENVS faculty to develop, test, and troubleshoot experiments and procedures within the ENVS and MSEM lab/field curriculum

• Communicate and enforce laboratory safety protocols to Teaching Assistants and students.

• Serve as a Building Marshal within the University's Emergency Response Team as needed.

• Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required in environmental science or related science.

• Two years of lab experience in environmental science or related science, preferably in an academic setting.

• Knowledge of and skill in independently preparing laboratory reagents and solutions.

• Expertise in chemical and biological laboratory techniques.

• Competence in college-level mathematics.

• Experience with record keeping and data management.

• Knowledge of and skill in operating lab instruments and scientific equipment.

• Knowledge of lab safety procedures.

• Skill with computers, including file handling, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing software.

• Training, knowledge, and skill in repairing, adjusting, and maintaining instruments, including many of the following:

• Spectrophotometers, incubators, analytical balances, PH Meters, air samplers, water testing equipment (Sondes), and microscopes.

• Must have a valid California state driver's license.

• Must be able to carry and lift 50 lbs from the floor to the lab table.

• Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student body, faculty and staff.

Salary Range :
$69,000-79,000 annualized salary, commensurate with experience
