Site Description

The Maya Angelou Academy at the DC Department of Corrections is an alternative school serving incarcerated men and women ages 18-22 with individualized education plans. Located within the Central Treatment Facility, the school also supports students housed in the Central Detention Facility. Designed to meet the unique needs of justice-involved students requiring special education, the academy provides educational opportunities regardless of their academic history or current standing.

Position Overview

A Special Education Teacher/Case Manager is responsible for ensuring that services and supports are in place for students with disabilities so that they can succeed in school. This role requires strong knowledge of special education practices, attention to detail and timelines, and a strong ability to collaborate with teachers, related service providers, and other staff. 

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities. IEPs should be developed in collaboration with general education teachers.
  • Ensure IEP records are thorough, up-to-date, and well-organized, including communication logs, progress reports, and assessments.
  • Assess student progress on IEP goals and use data to plan for instruction
  • Develop and deliver specialized instruction in the classroom during academic periods designed to help students meet grade-level standards and achieve personal learning goals
  • Ensuring services and accommodations are provided as outlined in students’ IEPs by monitoring documentation, conducting classroom observations, and participating in regular consultation meetings with teaching teams.
  • Ensuring teaching teams are knowledgeable about the needs of students. Developing and disseminating “IEPs at a glance” to teaching teams upon student entry. Updating the “IEPs at a glance” regularly, as annual IEPs are updated.
  • Analyzing progress monitoring data and providing feedback to improve service delivery and adequately document student progress.
  • Collaborating with other school leaders to facilitate professional development training in special education for staff members
  • Managing administrative assignments effectively and with a high level of professionalism and integrity
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or subject field (required)
  • Master’s degree in special education (preferred)
  • Must have or be eligible for certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (must obtain within 1 year of employment)
  • Experience working with opportunity or justice involved youth (preferred)
  • Familiarity with research-based instructional strategies

Salary and Benefits

 Maya Angelou Schools and See Forever Foundation salaries are comparable to those of other public charter schools in the District of Columbia area.  Compensation for instructional roles follows our established pay bands, which can be accessed from our career page.
