Athletic Director

Contract: Full-time, 230 day contract
Job Summary
The Athletic Director is responsible for leading the daily operations of the comprehensive athletic and student activities program at Middleton High School. This includes overseeing all aspects of interscholastic athletics, supervising staff, ensuring compliance with WIAA and district policies, and championing equitable access to sports and activities for all students. The Athletic Director supervises the Assistant Athletic Director and Activities Coordinator and works collaboratively with school and district leadership to provide a positive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate experience for student-athletes and activity participants.
Qualifications
● Administrative certification required
● Wisconsin Principal Certification preferred
● Experience as a head coach at the high school level
● Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, families, and community members
● Knowledge of athletic program operations, budgeting, and scheduling
● Commitment to equity, social justice, and culturally and linguistically responsive practices
Core Responsibilities
1. Program Leadership & Equity-Centered Management
● Leads and evaluates all aspects of the high school’s athletic and co-curricular programs
● Ensures equitable access and inclusive participation for all students, addressing systemic barriers
● Hires, mentors, and evaluates coaches and activity advisors with a focus on student development and equity
● Regularly reflects on personal bias and leads efforts to dismantle inequitable practices within athletics
● Collaborates with staff, students, and families to serve as a change agent for equity in extracurricular programming
● Develops and implements procedures that align with the district’s vision of equity and excellence
2. Operations, Scheduling & Event Management
● Coordinates scheduling of games, practices, facility usage, and special events
● Oversees game/event logistics including supervision, rosters, passes, medical coverage, awards, and transportation
● Hires and coordinates officials, manages contracts, and enforces athletic code policies
● Supervises the operation of the Indoor Pool
● Plans and oversees award ceremonies and leadership initiatives such as Captain’s Table
● Ensures safety and crisis response measures are in place for all athletic events
3. Compliance, Eligibility & Policy Implementation
● Ensures compliance with WIAA, Big 8 Conference, and district policies, including Title IX and academic eligibility standards
● Monitors and maintains accurate records related to student eligibility, attendance, and ineligibility
● Enforces the student-athlete code of conduct and implements disciplinary actions as needed
● Updates and publishes the Coaches Handbook and ensures all staff are trained on policy and expectations
4. Financial Oversight, Communication & Community Engagement
● Develops and manages the Athletic Department budget in collaboration with the principal
● Oversees equipment procurement, inventory, and storage processes
● Builds and maintains strong communication with families, booster clubs, community recreation, and outside facility users
● Attends and represents MHS at WIAA, Big 8, and other professional association meetings
● Promotes athletic events and fosters community partnerships that support student opportunities
● Utilizes data to assess program performance and guide decision-making
