POSITION: Gemstone Farm Paid Intern
The Prospector is seeking a Gemstone Farm Paid Intern to assist with our Outsiders program, collaborate with our partners at Gemstone, and further our mission and model of competitive and inclusive employment for people with disabilities. Over the last ten years, we’ve proven our model successful through a wide audience of moviegoers creating meaningful relationships with Prospects, and demonstrating the talents, sparkle, and employability of people with disabilities. We devise, create, and experiment with tools, products, curricula, strategies, and technology that allow us to serve as a global beacon of hope for the millions of Americans with disabilities who are
unemployed. One of those initiatives is the Outsiders program - our in-house landscaping team maintains the grounds of The Prospector. The Gemstone Paid Intern will work alongside Prospects and Gems (the name of Gemstone employees) to assist with various tasks on the farm, including planting, harvesting, livestock care, and general maintenance, often involving outdoor work and the operation of farm machinery.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with harvesting crops and watering all plants
- Feed and care for livestock
- Identify, develop, and implement relevant safety training protocols and procedures
- Operate push or riding lawnmowers; may operate heavier tractor equipment if needed
- Spread mulch and other materials around plants and plant beds
- Remove weeds and dead plants; prune overgrown limbs and leaves
- Operate landscaping machinery as required in a safe and orderly manner
- Maintain the existing landscaping design and ensure plant survival
- Plant new flowers, bushes, plants, and decorative shrubs
- Rake fallen leaves and remove debris
- Keep trails and pedestrian areas removed of snow and ice for safe usage
- Remove tree limbs, overgrowth, and other hazards
- Properly store and handle all equipment and tools
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience
- Demonstrates passion for, and understanding, of Prospector’s mission
- Fluent in Google Workspace apps and software
- Tech and social media savvy
- Communicates and collaborates effectively
- Coordinates multiple projects in a high-pressure, time-sensitive environment
- Possesses a positive attitude, good energy, flexibility, ability to work on a team, and attention to detail
- Deep ties to the community are strongly preferred
COMPENSATION:
The intern will earn $20/hour for 200 hours spanning 10 weeks, resulting in approximately $4,000
