JOB SUMMARY:
This position provides technical expertise and leadership to effectively manage salmon and steelhead enhancement activities and facilities for the Quinault Department of Fisheries (QDFi). The role is responsible for the care, survival, and well-being of all salmon and steelhead stocks, including broodstock, eggs, and juveniles, whether acquired and transferred to, held in, or transferred out of Quinault facilities. The position works under the supervision of the Operations Section Manager to assist in planning, organizing, and evaluating all Quinault Department of Fisheries Enhancement program activities. The Hatchery Specialist acts as the contracting officer for all contracts related to hatchery facility development, maintenance, and evaluation. This role also oversees data collection and organization related to all aspects of the enhancement program operations. Record keeping and archiving will be coordinated with the Operations Section Manager in accordance with departmental QA/QC policies and data archiving procedures. Specific authorities are delegated to the Hatchery Specialist by the Operations Section Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Contributes technical expertise to long range work plans and efforts of the enhancement program to support the Department’s broodstocking, egg acquisition and rearing, and tagging objectives.
- Monitors all aspects of fish husbandry and takes action as appropriate.
- Monitors fish health and takes action as appropriate based on established Departmental protocols and guidelines.
- Identifies facility and program needs and assists in developing annual budgets.
- Maintains a clear, written chain of custody and accountability for Tribal property placed within the Section's scope of responsibility.
- Participates in regional and watershed-based salmonid hatchery forums in order to develop and communicate QDFi strategies for managing enhancement programs based on best available scientific information and hatchery management policies.
- Contributes technical expertise for developing funding proposals to improve existing QDFi hatchery programs and facilities and develop new programs and associated facility needs as requested.
- Provides oversight and contract management for all construction and non-construction projects within the fisheries enhancement program.
Experience and Knowledge: A strong working knowledge salmon hatchery operations and management and three years experience in hatchery management or related profession. Knowledge of data collection and analysis procedures associated with salmon hatchery management. Experience with project planning and oversight. Experience developing and monitoring contracts.

- Ability to work independently.
- Communicate well, both orally and in writing.
- Work in adverse weather conditions; occasionally lifting objects heavier than 50 pounds; operation of open outboard motor boats in rough weather and/or on moving streams.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor of Science in Fisheries or related field, with coursework including fish husbandry and salmonid life history and development.
- A Master of Science degree in fisheries may be substituted for two years of experience.
- Valid Washington State Drivers License or willingness to obtain.
