Laboratory Services Assistant
JOBSUMMARY:
Under general supervision, receives samples from customers and logs them into a Laboratory Information Management System. This position also performs routine analyses and quality control checks as well as calibration and verification of essential lab equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Receive and log collected samples into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Retrieve and keep up to date Customer information in LIMS.
- Update and maintain sample field data and analyses in LIMS.
- Perform routine analysis and quality control as required by regulation and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on samples received.
- Perform, record, update, and maintain inventory and consumables log.
- Daily monitoring and recording of laboratory metrics including but not limited to:
- Temperature of refrigerators, freezers, ovens, and incubators
- Balance verification checks
- Calibration and verification of essential laboratory equipment.
- Preparing solutions and washing glassware
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Control site access through use of intercoms and surveillance systems.
- Some analysis as requested, under supervision, in the microbiology laboratory.
- Determine and use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skillsand Abilities Required:
- Knowledge of office and administrative practices and procedures.
- Skill in using PC Software including current Microsoft Office Suite of applications.
- Skill in communicating professionally and tactfully with other city employees and the public by oral and written means.
- Skill with organization and attention to detail.
- Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment utilizing knowledge of the organization's policies.
- Ability to work independently under general instructions.
- Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to filing, pulling, seeing, sorting, squatting, standing, stooping, twisting body, typing, walking, and writing.
- Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including but not limited to PC, telephone, calculator, scanner, and copier.
- Ability to prioritize deadlines and tasks.
- Ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly.
- Ability to plan, organize, monitor, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to accomplish unit objectives.
- Ability to understand mathematical calculations involving fractions, percentages, and decimals.
- Ability to work within a set schedule.
- Incumbent is subject to dust, fume/odor, chemical, mechanical, electrical, radiation, explosive and biological hazards.
Qualifying Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 1-2 years data entry or related experience.
- 1-2 years customer service or related experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Some college in a science related field
- Experience in a laboratory environment.
- Experience with a LIMS
