Job Duties
To assist Tidal Rivers Coordinator and District Fisheries Biologist in Charles City and Chesapeake District offices with managing Virginia's inland fish to maintain optimum populations of all aquatic species to serve the needs of the Commonwealth and to provide opportunity for all to enjoy wildlife, inland fish, boating and fishing. To restore and enhance aquatic wildlife and wildlife habitat necessary to ensure the quality of inland and migratory fishery resources as well as maintain and improve the economic and ecological benefits to the Commonwealth that are associated with these resources.
Minimum Qualifications
Working knowledge of fisheries sampling techniques and fisheries practices and principles. Ability to properly operate and maintain small watercraft, outboard motors and trailers, and specialized fisheries equipment. Ability to effectively organize, type, write, and present information. Working knowledge of Word, Access, Excel, and Power Point. Knowledge of state fishing regulations and basic angling techniques. Competency in various trade skills including electrical wiring, outboard motors, small engine repair and carpentry. Ability to work independently, to adapt to changing situations and conditions, to work outdoors in various weather conditions, to lift moderate to heavy loads, to carry moderate loads over rough terrain, to read detailed maps and other instructional information, and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of state purchasing procedures desired. Ability to obtain Boater Safety certification. Valid Virginia Driver's License required.
Additional Considerations
Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or aquatic wildlife management or a related field, with sufficient professional experience to document attainment of required knowledge. Certification as a fisheries/aquatic biologist by the American Fisheries, Wildlife, or other Society, can count towards education/experience. Boater Safety certification preferred.
