Summer Internship


The goal of this project is to obtain national accreditation for the City of Bloomington Public Works Department from the American Public Works Association (APWA). The candidate will support this effort by conducting research, drafting policies and procedures, engaging with peer agencies, and providing professional-level management assistance.
 

This position starts 5/26/2025 and ends 8/29/2025

Duties

Essential (primary)
 

Assess current Public Works Department operations to determine compliance with American Public Works Association (APWA) accreditation standards. 

Research and assist in developing new standard operating procedures to address areas where the department does not yet meet APWA accreditation requirements. 

Communicate with representatives from municipalities, counties, and other local government agencies nationwide via phone and email to compare policies, procedures, operational documents, and best practices related to APWA accreditation. 

Support Public Works administrative staff with short-term research projects as needed.

 

Job Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required. 

Some college coursework or post-secondary education, preferred. 

Ability to use analytical skills with the ability to interpret accreditation requirements and provide recommendations for written standard operating procedures. 

Knowledge of professional writing and communication techniques.

Knowledge and experience in local government management and/or public service, preferred.

Work is performed in a modern office environment. Special events might require work on evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

This position requires  the person to be comfortable reaching out to representatives from other local government agencies via phone and email in a professional and courteous manner.. Furthermore requires the ability to collaborate effectively with Public Works Department team members.
