Postgraduate Research Associate
Postgraduate Research Associate in Sensory Neurobiology (Butterwick Lab/Yale University)
The Butterwick Lab is seeking a highly motivated recent college graduate to join us in the Department of Pharmacology at the Yale School of Medicine. We seek to understand how animal olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste) receptors detect and discriminate among the enormous diversity of chemicals in the environment. We are particularly interested in how insect vectors of disease, such as mosquitoes and ticks, locate their human targets. To study these receptors, we are pursuing a structure-based approach that uses single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to visualize receptor-ligand interactions, coupled with a variety of biochemical, biophysical, electrophysiological, and cellular assays to investigate receptor function. Experience in any of these areas is beneficial but less critical than motivation, attention to detail, and a collaborative style that fosters teamwork and inclusivity.
Education: The Butterwick Lab is part of a vibrant and diverse research community at the Yale School of Medicine, where you will have the opportunity to engage with leading biomedical experts and participate in many educational opportunities, including seminars, poster sessions, career development workshops, and social networking events. This position offers the chance to deepen your research experience, making it ideal for candidates considering further studies, such as a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D., in biomedical sciences.
Training: We will provide training in performing biochemical analysis of chemosensory receptors. This may include but is not limited to: using tissue culture techniques to express receptors for purification or to perform activity assays; molecular biology; electrophysiology; using biochemical methods to purify receptors; and structure determination using cryo-EM. The successful candidate will also attend weekly group meetings to present their own work and to learn about other projects in the Butterwick Lab.
Mentoring: The successful candidate will work closely with other lab members and meet regularly with Dr. Butterwick for tailored guidance in research methodologies and career development.
Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in the sciences is required. Prior experience working in a life sciences research lab is preferred.
This is a full-time position for a period of 1–2 years, beginning Spring/Summer 2025 (start date is negotiable). Apply via Handshake and please include the following:
- a cover letter that outlines your motivation for pursuing this opportunity, your research interests, and career goals.
- your curriculum vitae (cv) or resume.
- contact information for two references.
Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
