Director of Social Services

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree with 3 years experience working in the fields of homelessness, mental health, substance abuse and aging. Supervisory experience. Excellent clinical assessment and diagnostic ability (using DSM-IV). Knowledge of public entitlements. Willingness to be on call 24 hours and as needed in emergency situations.

Job Description
This position reports to the Program Director. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervise and direct Department of Social Services: 4 caseworkers and 2 housing specialists
  • Provide on-going, regular supervision to caseworkers and housing specialists
  • Conduct regular weekly departmental staff meetings and case conferences
  • Assist in developing and monitoring clear treatment plans for all residents, and assist caseworkers to facilitate in carrying out treatment plans
  • Aid in developing necessary recording instruments and data collection tools, and ensure that all residents’ files are kept up to date
  • Develop and monitor group work (e.g., alcoholics/narcotics anonymous group, housing readiness group; or other treatment group) with residents
  • Evaluate need and plan for in-house trainings and staff development in the area of social services
  • Assist in developing creative social and recreational program for residents
  • Responsible for compiling weekly and monthly social service statistics for DHS
  • Develop linkages with community based agencies (e.g. Lower East Side Inter-Agency on Aging)
  • Be available (“on call”) for 24 hour coverage one out of every three weeks
  • Provide crisis intervention to residents as needed
  • Carry case load of residents (if needed)
  • Recruit and hire Social Service staff through outreach and interviewing
  • Provide supervision and instruction to Social Service interns
  • Cover for the Program Director in his/her absence
  • Coordinate all client referrals and intake information
  • Coordinate medical and psychiatric care follow up with physicians, hospitals, etc.
