Chief Meteorologist

KION-TV in Monterey-Salinas-Santa Cruz is looking for a full-time chief meteorologist.

 

The chief meteorologist is responsible for producing and anchoring live weather forecasts for all evening shows using the forecasting and graphics system Baron.  

 

We are looking for a someone with a great personality and attitude who is passionate about the weather. Someone who can deliver accurate forecasts using clear and conversational language that will connect with our viewers. The ideal candidate embraces social media and knows how to use lifestyle graphics, and the hand tracker to tell a clear, concise, and interesting weather story. 

 

Job duties include, but are not limited to: 

 

  • Meet digital and social PAU deadlines daily.
  • Ensure that slick lifestyle graphics are loaded into the system and review their use by scheduling monthly one-on-one feedback sessions with each meteorologist. Follow up each session with a written summary that is emailed to the met, copying the news director.
  • Use the lifestyle graphics when posting to web and social. 
  • Work with news director to establish severe weather response protocols for each platform.
  • Keep the news director updated on any potential severe weather. 
  • Calibrate hand tracker daily and ensure it is working for all mets. They should be used on the radar during major rain events, tracking storms at street level., and during fires. 
  • Customize banners to visually establish your tracking storyline. 
  • Use current conditions as a springboard into your forecast.
  • Add lifestyle graphics to reinforce the impact of your forecast; save street-level map locations for locations such as parks, trails, pools, etc.

 

The chief meteorologist also makes public appearances on behalf of the station, so ability to work a flexible schedule is required. The chief meteorologist answers to the news director.

Qualifications:  A bachelor’s degree in meteorology, two years of television broadcasting experience, and at least one weather seal, AMS and/or NWA is preferred. Candidate must pass a drug test and background check.  A valid driver’s license is required.

 

Pay range for this role is: $80,000 to $90,000 depending on experience.
