
Worship Arts Director & Worship Leader
Position Title: Worship Arts Director / Worship Leader
Reports to: Lead Pastor
Objective: To assist in the work of giving spiritual shape and form to worship services through music and creative arts, develop the teams that help lead worship, and to provide up-front worship leadership, particularly for GFMC’s “contemporary worship service.”
The Worship Arts Director / Worship Leader serves as a key leader at Greenville Free Methodist Church and the church’s efforts to serve God and God’s people with the Truth of God’s Word, the Freedom of a Spirit-led life, and the Transformation that comes from a life of genuine worship and discipleship. Our team is searching for an experienced and passionate Worship Leader to join our church community. Responsibilities include leading worship services, working with church staff to provide creativity and intentionality in worship, and overseeing/mentoring the worship team of musicians, vocalists and all other creative arts volunteers. Candidates should have music, ministry, and leadership experience.
The candidate must be a passionate follower of Jesus whose faith is lived out with integrity. The candidate should possess a genuine love for worship, the ability to articulate a theology of worship, and a desire to lead others into a deeper experience of worship. The candidate should be leadership-focused, musically astute, detail-oriented, and a team player with a background in, or appreciation of, the Wesleyan tradition of the Christian faith.
Primary Responsibilities
Worship Planning
- Attend weekly worship planning sessions with the pastoral staff and other members of the worship planning team
- Stay updated with current worship music trends and techniques.
- Maintain a master song list database, including input on any new worship songs and team members needed to bring variety and excellence to worship services.
- Assist with planning and implementation of special elements for all worship services (2 Sunday morning services and other special services throughout the year).
- Assist with crafting worship components and identifying participants, notifying and confirming with all participants by email or text. Utilize Planning Center software to organize and communicate service plans.
Worship Service Leadership (primarily at second service)
- Serve as GFMC’s primary Worship Leader on a weekly basis. Plan, prepare, and lead worship in church services, ensuring a spiritually engaging and meaningful experience for the community.
- Recruit and mentor worship team members, including paid college interns
- Schedule and coordinate worship teams, working in coordination with a part-time IT/tech director for audio, video, and lighting support
- Appropriately select and arrange music, in cooperation with pastoral staff, that aligns with the theme and purpose of each service. Arrange songs in a way that creates a cohesive and impactful worship flow.
- Lead rehearsals with musicians, tech team, and other key leaders, including organization and production of weekly charts and lead sheets, to ensure a level of preparation that leads to both planned excellence and the opportunity to be led by the Spirit.
- Assist with set up and preparation of sanctuary worship space
Worship Services (both services)
- Produce slides using Pro Presenter, including responsive readings, song lyrics, imported videos, etc.
- Collaborate with audio, lighting, and visual teams to enhance the technical aspects of worship
- Collaborate with the tech director to manage equipment needs related to worship
- Oversee maintenance, repair, or replacement of musical equipment in the sanctuary and youth areas as needed, as well as piano tuning/repair and organ upkeep
- Oversee the worship arts budget, making purchases in line with needs and projected budget
Social Media, Technology, and Creative Arts
- Assist with GFMC Social Media strategy and implementation
- Oversee tech needs related to both sanctuary worship, online worship/event streaming, and IT needs in spaces utilized for youth and adults
- Assist the worship decor subcommittee with design, creation, and installation of special elements for the worship space
Special Events
- Assist pastoral team with oversight and coordination for special events that request worship leadership and/or technical support (ex: Gateway Leadership Summit, weddings, funerals)
Engage in Ongoing Spiritual Growth
- Cultivate a growing relationship with God through prayer, Bible study, and spiritual disciplines. Continually seek personal and spiritual growth to effectively lead others in worship.
Qualifications
- Worship arts-related degree preferred but not required
- Ability and experience leading worship in a ministry context
- Ability to play a musical instrument preferred but not required
- Prior experience in this field of at least two years (could include college/student ministry leadership)
- Technical skills in worship-related software, including Planning Center and ProPresenter
- Strong organizational skills and experience in leadership development
- Ability to effectively and graciously communicate with both staff and congregational members
- Profession of faith in Jesus Christ; spiritual maturity; and the heart of a pastor/shepherd
- Background in, or appreciation of, the Wesleyan tradition of the Christian faith
Salary and Benefits
- Salary and professional development funds commensurate with experience and training. This is a full-time position with support for continuing education (conferences, etc.) provided.
