TITLE

Laboratory Technician II 

WHAT YOU WILL ACHIEVE

This position will be responsible for executing quality control-related assays such as miSeq next-generation sequencing (NGS), Nanopore sequencing, and diagnostic restriction digests, as well as producing DNA preparations at various scales (high-throughput, small scale, large scale).

These contributions will support the plasmid & DNA production lab’s role in fulfilling Addgene’s mission of making high quality materials available to the scientific community.

LOCATION & POLICY ON REMOTE WORK

This position will work out of our Watertown, Massachusetts Headquarters. Our beautiful office space has free, ample parking with a complimentary shuttle from Harvard Square and is on multiple bus lines, with the cost of public transit covered by Addgene.

The Role:

A  Lab Technician II is responsible for executing the miSeq NGS and Nanopore sequencing pipelines and producing high yield DNA preps. Under the direction of the Sr. DNA Services Manager, the Lab Technician II will ensure on-time delivery of DNA-based samples and sequencing data to support the work of the other production teams.

To Succeed in this Role, You Will:

  • Execute upstream processing steps necessary for production, QC, and/or order fulfillment of DNA-based product requests. This includes small and large scale DNA prepping, QC techniques for DNA quantification, and NGS sequencing.
  • Prepare and load Illumina and Oxford Nanopore libraries on the miSeq or Nanopore machines, respectively. Troubleshoot issues that may arise and ensure successful completion of a sequencing run.
  • Conduct quality control of DNA samples including quantifying DNA concentrations and performing restriction digests of DNA samples prepared via low and high throughput pipelines
  • Troubleshoot issues that arise during lab processing and DNA preparation 
  • Use Addgene’s computer software to process DNA-based products and inventoried items
  • Liaise with other lab technicians, Scientific Support, and QC teams for customer-related requests
  • Assist with process optimization and troubleshooting that may arise in collaboration with manager
  • Support lab operations in ensuring all lab consumables and reagents required for essential functions of the position are readily available for timely delivery of results. May include assisting with inventory management, solution preparation, and standard lab tasks.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) within the team

Skills and Competencies

  • M.S. in a biological science discipline or a B.S./B.A. in biological sciences with 2 years related experience
  • Experience with NGS (eg Illumina or Oxford Nanopore) required  
  • Demonstrated aseptic technique and working knowledge of general micro/molecular biology techniques required
  • Experimental lab experience (can be academic) and experimental design preferred
  • Experience with plasmid DNA purification preferred 
  • Effective process management skills
  • Self-motivated, organized, able to work independently
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English; strong written and oral communication skills required
  • Familiarity with general computer software, including Google Docs and web applications
