WHO ARE WE
The Office of Communications is responsible for providing media information, public information and internal support services for the Texas Department of Agriculture. Division staff members keep the public informed of TDA activities and agriculture issues via traditional and social media channels.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
The Communications Intern will assist the Communications division with educating and informing media outlets, stakeholders, and the public. You will work under close supervision with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in completing multiple communication projects.
Assist in composing and revising materials such as media advisories, news releases, speeches, backgrounders, fact sheets, biographies, and newsletters.
Assist in researching and developing materials and strategies for department social media communications.
Assist in developing, proposing, and planning story ideas about state and agricultural issues and post to social media networking sites.
Assist in responding to media inquiries.
Assist in processes to organize all TDA digital content, including those assets available for public use via the website or other online channels and those assets for internal agency use.
Assist in capturing, downloading, and organizing TDA and Commissioner TV/Radio appearances for public use and/or archival purposes.
Follow all TDA policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION
Enrollment in a college, university, or graduate program or a recent graduate with a minimum grade point average of 3.0* and major coursework in journalism, public relations, advertising, communications, or related field.
Completion of at least 60 credit hours*.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of office procedures; of spelling, punctuation, and grammar; and of business or program terminology, methods, and procedures.
Skill in the use of a computer and office equipment; and providing customer service excellence to both internal and external customers.
Ability to prepare and maintain records, files, and reports; to transfer stock from one location to another; and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and exercise sound judgment and discretion.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal office work environment and may have exposure to dust and environmental allergens consistent with normal business activities and human contact. Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve walking; standing; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping, and bending; performing tasks requiring fine motor skills and coordination; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be able to work extended periods at a computer and may require working extended hours and some evenings and weekends, as needed. May be required to travel, which will include overnight. May involve travel (up to 5%), occasionally overnight.
