Summer Food Service Program Intern

The Food Bank CENC is a sponsor of the USDA Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Through this program, the Food Bank has multiple sites to provide free food for children during the summer months.  The program is offered in community locations such as parks, schools, playgrounds, housing communities, day camps, churches, and community centers from June to August.  The Summer Food Service Program is often combined with learning and recreational activities for the children. 

 

This position will support the Food Bank’s sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program. Support includes ensuring compliance with Food Bank and state regulatory agencies, conducting required site visits and trainings, enforcement of recordkeeping and program attendance, inventory management at the site level, and communicating program progress to appropriate Food Bank personnel.

 

Typical Work Schedule: 8:30am - 5:00pm | Monday - Friday
*The intern position is a seasonal position from May 19th, 2025 through on August 8th, 2025 (5/19/25 - 8/8/25).*

Job Responsibilities:
•    Provide operational and administrative support to program sites.
•    Implement and support organizational and site level outreach efforts to ensure target participation numbers are achieved at each sponsored site.
•    Conduct required sponsor monitoring visits with the team
•    Ensure site compliance with record keeping – daily and weekly meal count records, signed required program documents, etc.
•    Conduct administrative review of program at conclusion of program participation.
•    Other assignments related to the management of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), up to and including recruitment of additional SFSP sites.
•    Engage with summer sites for program enhancement
•    Utilize the Food Bank’s social media platforms to promote SFSP

Objectives:
 

Increase participant engagement focus by encouraging summer sites to offer age-appropriate activities to the children

·        Keep data of how many sites receive engagement rich activities for the children.

·        Keep track of how many of our sites are closed enrollment.

·        Request success stories from each site on how age-appropriate activities have influenced the child’s learning and/or educational experience.

 

Report and monitor activities alongside the SFSP team to ensure compliance with the Food Bank and state regulatory agencies. To include:

·        Conducting required monitoring visits.

·        Visiting sites to assist with regulation, rules, or compliance.

·        Ensuring site compliance with recordkeeping such as daily and weekly meal counts.

 

Ensure that SFSP is contributing data driven insights to the Food Bank through:

·        Ensure children are enjoying the meals through pre and post survey

·        Ensure site supervisors are receptive to instruction on rules and regulations through pre and post survey

·        Provide results of the surveys to the Director of Child Nutrition Programs

 

Qualifications: 

•    High school diploma or GED required, college experience preferred in Public Health, Social Work, Business administration, or similar degree.
•    Proficient in using Microsoft Suite (e.g., Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
•    Advanced skills in electronic counting systems or similar software to be able to read, understand, interpret and enter data
•    High degree of organization
•    Must be detail-oriented and demonstrate the ability to perform in a fast-paced work environment
•    Ability to work with diverse groups of people and a commitment to social justice
•    Demonstrated initiative and performance with little limited supervision
•    Strong interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills
•    Valid NC driver’s license, with good driving record for travel with the SFSP team throughout the Food Bank’s 34 county service area is required.
•    An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for these requirements
•    Exhibit creative thinking as it relates to our social media outreach to promote and share SFSP content 
•    Professionalism and customer service experience is required.
•    Demonstrated knowledge of Summer Food Service Programs with the US Department of Agriculture is preferred

Occasionally required to operate a Food Bank motor vehicle.

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to work in an office setting or out in the field. Occasionally, the employee will be required to drive an automobile. The employee will be required to interact with Food Bank personnel in the warehouse(s). In doing so, the employee will occasionally be exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. The warehouse can be extremely cold at times and extremely hot during the summer months.
