Chemistry Intern

Summary:

ATOMICS is an early-stage startup that spun out of Brown University, and we are developing small molecule data storage systems to solve the world’s pressing data storage and computing challenges. Our core technology provides solutions for invisible physical object labeling in addition to data storage and molecular computing, making our technology dual use with applications spanning government and commercial sectors. The nature of our technology is highly interdisciplinary, and we are excited to welcome chemistry interns to the team to work on challenging formulation projects and develop revolutionary technologies for the future!

Responsibilities as an intern chemist:

  • Design laboratory experiments, including preparation and execution
  • Prepare chemical solutions and reagents for ink formulations
  • Conduct routine tests and analyses using the prepared formulations
  • Optimize formulations for performance based on test results
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of experiments and results
  • Perform data analysis and report preparation
  • Assist with inventory management of lab supplies and chemicals
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for research improvement

Preferred technical skills/education:

  • Pursuing or recently completed a degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field (preferably MS/PhD or BS with 3+ years of wet lab research experience)
  • Proficient knowledge of laboratory techniques and chemical handling
  • Extensive experience making solutions and complex mixtures of chemicals
  • Understanding of formulation chemistry, particularly in inks, coatings, or polymers
  • Experience with pigment dispersion, rheology, and viscosity measurements
  • Knowledge of surfactants, binders, and additives used in ink formulation
  • Ability to independently optimize formulations for performance based on test results
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot formulation issues
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research-focused team
  • Attention to detail and ability to design wet laboratory experiments with limited supervision
  • Proficiency in data analysis and report writing
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and regulations
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

This internship is for the summer term (May - August 2025), with the possibility of an extension for up to one year.
