We are looking for a passionate, dynamic Communications Associate who will help amplify our mission, reach new audiences, and elevate the impact of our research.
Your Role
As our Communications Associate at HCRN, you will support the development and execution of communication strategies that drive awareness, foster engagement, and educate the public on the importance of cancer research. You’ll work closely with our researchers and external partners to craft compelling stories, create diverse content, and ensure our messaging reaches the right audiences.
Key Responsibilities
Content Strategy and Creation
- Lead and execute innovative communication strategies to promote HCRN’s research initiatives across multiple channels, ensuring content resonates with both scientific and general audiences.
- Produce compelling content tailored to various platforms including:
- Dynamic web content that reflects our research and updates activities and collaborators.
- Well-researched articles, newsletters, and blog posts that highlight HCRN’s impact in cancer research.
- Visually appealing flyers, brochures, and print materials that communicate our mission in a concise and compelling way.
- Engaging video and podcast content, including promotional videos and interviews with researchers, to further illustrate our work and achievements.
- Social media campaigns designed to raise awareness of our initiatives and drive interaction.
Website Management
- Maintain and regularly update the HCRN website ensuring the content is accurate, timely, and aligned with our mission, current studies, and impact on cancer research.
- Oversee the management of WordPress platforms, ensuring seamless user experiences and visually consistent web pages.
- Perform basic HTML updates to improve site functionality and aesthetics as needed.
Media and Collaboration
- Work closely with marketing teams at research sites to coordinate messaging, share resources, and ensure alignment across all communication efforts, including video content.
- Write and distribute press releases, feature stories and study-specific announcements ensuring they are tailored to the right audience.
- Highlight the achievements of investigators and member sites, crafting narratives that showcase their contributions to the field of cancer research.
Social Media and Digital Presence
- Manage the day-to-day operations of HCRN’s social media channels, developing campaigns and strategies to increase engagement and visibility.
- Utilize scheduling and engagement tools to streamline operations and optimize interaction with followers.
- Track and analyze the performance of social media campaigns, adjusting strategies based on insights and metrics to continually improve outreach.
Professional Development
- Stay informed about emerging communications technologies, trends, and tools, continuously improving your skills and staying ahead of industry developments.
- Seek out and participate in networking opportunities to share knowledge and learn from peers in the communications and research sectors.
What We're Looking For
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field.
- A proven track record in writing, demonstrated through a portfolio that includes articles, essays, blog posts, or other writing samples.
- Demonstrated strengths in visual design with a portfolio that includes examples of still images and graphic design.
- Advanced proficiency in:
- WordPress content management
- Major social media platforms (Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.)
- Digital content creation tools (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.)
- Basic HTML for web updates
- Some experience in audiovisual production including video work, podcasting, or similar content creation.
Skills and Competencies
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with an ability to craft clear, compelling messages for diverse audiences.
- Strong attention to detail, ensuring all communications are accurate and aligned with our organizational standards.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects concurrently while meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality work.
- Adaptability and a proactive approach with the ability to think on your feet and pivot when necessary.
- Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and strategically about communication challenges.
- Willingness to be a generalist in communications and marketing, covering a wide range of tasks including writing, interviewing, web management, social media, photography, layout and design and more.
