SUMMARY: Kaleidoscope is seeking an innovative and enthusiastic leader who will support and promote the mission and charter of this award-winning school. The principal will work collaboratively with certified staff and support staff, parents, the Academic Policy Committee (APC), and the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District (KPBSD) to educate the whole child through integrated arts and science to nurture meaningful learning.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS: To apply, a candidate must have or be eligible to obtain a current Alaska Type B Administrative Certificate and a current Alaska Teacher Certificate. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the following areas: building administration, K-6 classroom teaching, and the use of “Conscious Discipline.”
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Administrator is charged with operating the school in accordance with the school’s charter and bylaws, the school district’s policies and procedures, and the state’s charter school regulations. S/he is also responsible for managing and administering the school’s budget in accordance with the above regulations. The administrator is directly responsible to the school’s Academic Policy Committee and the District Superintendent. S/he is responsible for continuous development and improvement of KSAS, its programs and staff. The administrator shall organize and engage in community activities to provide a continuous and appropriate interpretation of the KSAS program to the general public.
A successful candidate will demonstrate the following:
• Strong skills in leadership, verbal and written communication and problem solving • Ability to facilitate site-based collaborative decision-making
• Knowledge and understanding of developmentally appropriate classrooms and best practices
• Knowledge of integrated curriculum, assessment and instruction; particularly the integration of arts and sciences
• Knowledge of current educational research, theory and practice
• Familiarity with charter school polices and regulations
• Experience in writing and managing budgets and grants
• Experience with site-based decision making
• Commitment to increasing student achievement
• Ability to effectively run day-to-day operations of the school
• Willingness to set high personal and professional goals and objectives for success
• Capability of ensuring safety and security of KSAS students, staff, building and grounds
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Uphold and support the Charter of Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science.
2. Provide instructional leadership to staff members and maintain an in-service growth program.
3. Support and encourage an integrated curriculum with an emphasis on arts and science.
4. Assume responsibility for the school budget. Duties include compiling, modifying, and recommending a budget to the APC for approval. The administrator must provide a monthly updated budget report to the APC.
5. Encourage community among students. Have a commitment to helping children become kind, helpful, responsible and respectful of others, through the use of “Conscious Discipline” and the Highly Effective Teaching principles of “Life Skills” and “Guidelines”.
6. Build relationships with students, staff, families, community, the APC, and KPBSD; network with other schools.
7. Build consensus while maintaining the priorities of the school’s mission.
8. Identify and advocate for interventions and supports.
9. Responsible for regular official reports and as many special reports as may be necessary to keep the APC, School Board, and school district personnel fully informed of programs being planned or implemented.
10. Responsible for hiring staff through screening and interviewing of prospective candidates. Must convey to the district’s human resources director evaluative recommendations of candidates.
11. Assume such other duties and responsibilities as designated by the APC or the Superintendent.
CERTIFICATION AND HIGHLY QUALIFIED REQUIREMENTS: Must have a current Alaska Type B Administrative Certificate and a current Alaska Teacher Certificate issued by the Alaska Department of Education on/or before the first contract day. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages school employees and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of those employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the district policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees, addressing complaints, and resolving problems. Must be capable of supervising effectively while duly considering input from staff as equal partners in Kaleidoscope.
EDUCATION SKILLS: Language Skills: Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and newsletters. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff, parents, APC and the general public. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to analyze educational data and statistics. Ability to calculate figures and amounts related to budget such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, and school physical plant management information such as area, circumference and volume.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, the APC and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements, Board of Education policies and Kaleidoscope Charter and Bylaws.
