Communications Coordinator

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Communications Coordinator is creative writer who will support our online news coverage of education, government, and politics in Tennessee and work

closely with the Communications Director to advance our organization’s policy and communications objectives. This is an ideal position for someone who enjoys doing something different each day. You will cover Tennessee government and local school board decisions for our organization’s non-profit news outlet, the Tennessee Firefly, and play a valuable role in implementing TSS’ social media strategies and external communications. 

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Communications Coordinator will have the following primary responsibilities:

  • Assist in reporting for the Tennessee Firefly on key education policy developments, including pitching stories, conducting interviews and writing stories on deadline.
  • Assist in the production of the Tennessee Firefly’s podcast including content planning, coordination, and basic editing or promotion.
  • Create and manage social media content for each of the organization’s profiles and platforms, including Tennesseans for Student Success and the Tennessee Firefly, ensuring consistency in messaging, tone, and brand identity.
  • Create engaging and informative digital content that aligns with the organization’s messaging and informs the public about key  issues impacting Tennessee’s students.
  • Assist with website maintenance, ensuring timely posting of news articles, stories, and events.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Director to improve communications about the organization, its staff, and its priorities.
  • Assist in the management of marketing campaigns and event planning and promotion.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Director and Senior Staff to respond to media inquiries and assist with story pitches to media across the state.
  • Support the adherence and promotion of the organization’s brand identity across all communications and content pieces.
  • Monitor social media trends and engagements, offering ideas to Improve and expand the organization’s content strategies and execution.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field.

Experience: Three years of communication experience, preferably experience in a newsroom (television, newspaper, radio, or digital).

Skills: Experience with Emma, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and Audition is a plus.

Physical: Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods.

Job Type: Full Time, Salaried 

Job Location: In person, In Franklin, TN Offices

Travel: 15 to 20%
