Intern (GIS-Geospatial)

Woodwell Climate Research Center (Woodwell Climate) conducts science for solutions at the nexus of climate, people, and nature. We partner with leaders and communities for just meaningful impact to address the climate crisis.

Summary:

Join Woodwell’s 2025 Summer Internship Program as an Intern (GIS-Geospacial) on the Arctic team. Our team maps abrupt thaw landscapes in the Arctic using remote sensing and Artificial Intelligence (AI). As an intern, you will be provided with learning materials, documents, and hands-on training.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Work on a geospatial data set using GIS software 
  • Manage a large-scale geospatial data set and its documentation
  • Gain practical experience by working on projects and tasks within scientific research 
  • Network with professionals in field of interest, including mentors, managers and other interns
  • Develop and enhance skill sets within chosen scientific and/or operational programs
  • Participate and learn about the Center’s scientific disciplines and operational programs through staff meetings and other employee engagement activities
     

Must Have the Following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Exposure to GIS and/or geospatial data (ArcGIS would be preferable)
  • Course work includes Earth sciences, Ecology, Geographic Information System or related
  • Basic proficiency with word processing, data management and presentation software (e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint or equivalent programs) 

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in college program in Computer Science, Environmental Science, Ecology, Botany, Biology, Chemistry or relevant field
     

Physical Requirements:

In the office:

  • Ability to tolerate sustained periods of walking, standing, sitting
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds
  • Ability to communicate
  • Ability to kneel, bend, and carry items
  • Ability to use phone and computers
  • Repetitive movements
  • Air, train, vehicle travel to attend meetings/event

Work Environment: 

The functions of this role are conducted in an indoor environment.

Desired Start Date: Monday, June 16, 2025 through August 22, 2025 

Classification and Compensation: This is a full-time, temporary, hourly, non-exempt position, with an hourly salary (based on Massachusetts minimum wage or equivalent state where the employee is located). Internship will not exceed more than 90 days.

Location: Falmouth, MA Onsite, Hybrid or possibly Remote
