Deputy Attorney General - Consumer Protection/Antitrust and Complex Litigation

Position Summary: 

The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Unit (CPU) is responsible for enforcing state and federal laws that protect consumers from fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices. The Deputy Attorney General engages in civil litigation to enforce the Oklahoma Consumer Protection Act, the Oklahoma Antitrust Reform Act, and relevant state statutes. The Deputy Attorney General organizes, directs, and supervises the Antitrust and Complex Litigation section of CPU and works closely with the Deputy Attorney General of the Consumer Advocacy section of CPU.  Qualified candidates must have outstanding legal judgment and be able to effectively and professionally research, prepare, analyze and understand complex information and legal issues. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

Essential Functions:

  • Assign, direct and supervise the work of subordinate attorneys, which includes ensuring that the attorneys are properly preparing and filing litigation matters; conducting discovery; drafting motions and other pleadings; representing the office in court hearings; and taking matters to trial as needed
  • Assign, direct and supervise the work of support staff to ensure that unit functions are operating efficiently 
  • Actively participate in strategy discussions for, and at times appear in, court proceedings 
  • Collaborate with counterparts in other states to investigate and, as necessary, litigate unlawful practices on both a regional and national scale
  • Ensure multistate matters are reviewed and assigned to staff as appropriate
  • Prepare weekly reports updating the Attorney General and the leadership team on current and upcoming cases and other developments
  • Attend national litigation strategy sessions, conferences, and training 
  • Provide mentoring and identify and coordinate relevant training opportunities for team members 
  • Maintain effective and professional communications with all assigned staff on matters of unit or other relevant concern(s) and engage in conflict resolution as needed
  • Recommend employment actions for assigned staff, including but not limited to, hiring and terminating employees
  • Analyze and compile statistical information for metric evaluations and reports   
  • Other duties as assigned

 

This position will require some travel, both within and outside the State.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Applicants must be a licensed attorney and have a minimum of five years of experience in the practice of law. Strong writing and oral advocacy skills are required.  Preference may be given to candidates with supervisory experience and/or litigation experience.
