Ostrea Marine

Company

Ostrea Marine is a marine science and technology start-up located in Juneau Alaska. Ostrea focuses on the development, testing and deployment of scientific research and aquaculture equipment, as well as the design, outfitting and maintenance of research and aquaculture facilities. Recently Ostrea was awarded two $100k Innovation Grants from the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation. The first grant was in support of a collaboration with oyster growers to build and test new tools and techniques to grow oysters in SE Alaska. The second grant is to trial multiple novel tools and techniques to detect, track, and predict harmful algal blooms and related toxins in shellfish tissue. Ostrea typically consults on the development of new technologies, facilities and/or projects, however we are currently developing a new product of our own. We have designed and prototyped an autonomous eDNA sampling system that collects and preserves genetic material from marine and freshwater environments based on the needs of researchers. We are actively pursuing funding to support this project including a NOAA SBIR application. Ostrea recently received an SBIR Phase 0 grant from the Alaska Small Business Development Center. Ostrea’s facilities include a 3d design studio, a light manufacturing shop with tools to build, test and modify electronics, and fabricate in wood, metal and plastics, and a small wet lab.

Internship

Development and testing of an automated microscopy tool to aid shellfish growers/harvesters in predicting harmful algal blooms.
