Mayor's Office Internship

Position Summary:  The Mayor's Office is offering a unique opportunity in the Mayor's Office. As a part of our larger City of Terre Haute Internship Program, this internship will allow a student to contribute to City government, hear from local leaders, and experience the day-to-day operations of the City of Terre Haute. This is a great opportunity for a student interested in starting a career in public service to learn about the structure of local government. We strive for our interns to leave with foundational knowledge, communication skills, and a strong network of community leaders and organizations.

About the City’s Local Government: Terre Haute is a class 2 city rich in history and located at the “Crossroads of America” where the national roads (US 40 and US 41) intersect. Terre Haute is located in Vigo County. The city of Terre Haute is governed by a full-time Mayor who is the city's chief administrative official and a nine-member city council. Vigo County is governed by three county commissioners and a seven-member county council whose responsibilities lie primarily in the area of fiscal affairs. 

 

Duties will include (but are not limited to the following):

  • Coordinating Mayoral proclamations
  • Shadowing the Mayor at events and meetings
  • Drafting ordinances
  • Conducting research
  • Mayoral talking points for events or interviews
  • Facilitating written correspondence including proclamations, certificates, official greetings, and other letters
  • Attending board, council, or commission meetings
  • Working with various internal and external offices and stakeholders

Qualifications 

  • Prior quantitative coursework or research experience, preferably in a discipline applied to Political science, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Knowledge of local and state government
  • Ability to follow detailed and technical instructions
  • Effective written communication
  • Exemplary verbal communication
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and flexible with careful attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple ongoing tasks

Preferred Skills 

  • Experience creating professional reports
  • Knowledge of city ordinances
