Title: John Hamm Conservation Intern
Office Location: Allegheny Land Trust, 416 Thorn St., Sewickley, PA, 15143 – Field work will occur primarily at Wingfield Pines Conservation Area in Bridgeville, Allegheny County
Time: May - August (A total of 10 weeks at 35 hours per week)
Compensation: $15/hour, no benefits
Reports To: Caitlin Seiler, Vice President of Stewardship

Internship Summary:
This Allegheny Land Trust internship will engage you with land conservation, volunteers, land management, non-profit operations, and so much more. This position assists with critical stewardship, fieldwork, land management, volunteer recruitment, and restoration of Chartiers Creek and Wingfield Pines Conservation Area and provides support at the nearby Meyer Farm Conservation Area located in the Chartiers Creek Watershed. The position will work with a variety of ALT departments, local, state, and federal agencies as well as nonprofit organizations to accomplish tasks for the betterment of the green spaces and entire watershed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Communicate with visitors to promote understanding of the land’s unique attributes and threatened resources. Lead interpretive walks of the Abandoned Mine Drainage system at ALT’s Wingfield Pines Conservation Area in Upper St. Clair. Coordinate, lead, and wrap-up volunteer workdays and events.
Make informal presentations and represent ALT at community events and meetings. Attend public events collaborating with community members, local authorities, volunteers in support of healthy conservation areas.
Assist with management plan implementation, invasive species control, native habitat development, and more.
Perform general maintenance of trails, signs, parking areas, and other visitor facilities in conservation areas found in the watershed using tractors, mowers, small power equipment, and hand tools.
Maintain accurate records in the ALT stewardship office of activities and events on conservation lands.
Assist ALT staff as needed.
Requirements and Basic Qualifications:
Pursuing a degree in natural sciences, park management, landscape architecture, or a related field.
Available for a total of 10 weeks.
Excellent public speaking, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds; ability to use hand tools and some mechanical equipment.
Familiarity with native flora/fauna as well as invasive species.
Knowledge of trail maintenance and ecological land management principles.
Availability to work some evenings and weekends.
A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (gas expenses are reimbursed at the federal IRS rate.)
