Location: Homestead, Florida

Reports to:  Laboratory Manager

 

Classification:  ☐Exempt  ☒ Non-exempt

Job Summary : 

A laboratory assistant must be capable to assist in all the daily water quality laboratory and field activities. This includes to support the calibrations of sensors, field reading of water quality parameters, take water samples etc). The desire to learn and grow is very welcomed.

 

Job Description : 

Core areas of responsibility, in general, are to support the daily activities of the water quality team. That includes:

 

  • Taking/Collect daily water samples
  • Cleaning and keep in order the laboratory materials (Sensors, sampling bottles and other glassware, etc.).
  • Cleaning and calibration of Handheld meters and Stationary sensors located in the RAS system, water treatment systems, and in the chemical laboratory.
  • Perform the daily water chemical analysis, wet chemistry, and take the values from Handheld sensors.
  • Be able to write down and keep records of all the values obtained by the daily chemical analysis.
  • Always being able to notice changes on the water quality parameters and/or in the performance of sensors and reporting them immediately.
  • Gathering information and relaying it promptly and effectively to the water quality team and manager.
  • Report records of measured values on time
  • Perform all aspects of the job in a responsible, accurate, and detailed oriented fashion.

 

Skills, competencies, and knowledge to perform the work 

 

  • Undergraduate degree in Biology or Chemistry
  • Associate degree required (Bachelor’s degree or technician level).
  • Aquaculture background preferred (Not exclusive).
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment, performing chemical tests.
  • Be familiar or have experience with ultrasonic cleaning of laboratory glassware
  • Must be competent in excel (Formulas, Making graphs, etc.)
  • Accurate with mathematic operations
  • Have experience working with Handheld meters (YSL, OxyGuard, and Hach)
  • Desired knowledge on how to calibrate instruments/laboratory equipment
  • Comfortability in Aquaculture activities, which includes working with fish, aquafeed, water,  wet areas and wearing boots
  • Capable to prioritize tasks and organizing systematized data to ensure quality in the results.
  • Flexibility on work schedule, as required by current needs.
  • Able to work on weekends, holidays, or available for emergency situations.
  • Ability to communicate in written and verbal English. Spanish will be a plus but is not a requirement.
  • Constant desire to learn and grow.

 

Work Environment
 This job operates in a combined office and farm/production and construction environment.

 

Schedule

  • Monday – Friday (40 hrs a week)
  • Daily shift with a rotational schedule.
