Shellfish Research Laboratory Internship
Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant Shellfish Research Laboratory is looking for a motivated individual that wants to learn about shellfish hatchery, aquaculture, and restoration. The shellfish lab internship is designed to introduce and teach skills dealing with shellfish aquaculture, hatchery, algae culture and oyster restoration. The work is set up to allow for greater understanding of shellfish aquaculture and introduce science-based learning to provide technical training and further develop their education through experiential learning.
This internship will provide experiential learning opportunities and practical work experience. This position is intended for an undergraduate student to explore career interest, develop teaching skills and expand professional networks in shellfish aquaculture and restoration.

Assist hatchery manager with hatchery operations Assist hatchery manager with algal culture Assist with aquaculture research Assist with estuarine research Assist with other shellfish lab needs
Location and Hours
Position based at UGA Shellfish Research Laboratory on UGA’s Skidaway Marine Science Campus, Skidaway Island (20 Ocean Science Circle, Savannah, GA) 8-12 weeks, 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and occasional weekends.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position
- Excellent team working, communication, and leadership skills
- First Aid and CPR certification
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Intern must be currently enrolled in accredited college/university
- Completion of internship application and standard background check
- Valid state driver’s license
- United States citizen or possess a valid U.S. work visa
- Pre and post internship assessments, progress and summary reports, and exit interview
Physical Demands
- Physical ability to work outdoors in ambient conditions and lift objects up to 50 lbs
