Cost Accountant

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Senior Cost Accountant to join our finance team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cost accounting, project accounting and possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. The Senior Cost Accountant will play a crucial role in managing and improving our cost accounting processes, providing insightful financial analysis, and supporting decision-making for cost control and efficiency improvements.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cost Analysis and Reporting: Conduct regular cost analysis to determine the actual costs of manufacturing goods and services. Prepare detailed cost reports, variance analyses and dashboards to support management in decision-making.
  • Inventory Management: Oversee inventory valuation and reconciliation processes. Ensure accurate and timely recording of inventory transactions and support annual physical inventory counts.
  • Cost Allocation: Execute cost allocation methods to accurately distribute costs across departments and projects. Ensure consistency and accuracy in cost allocation practices.
  • Financial Audits: Support external audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations related to cost accounting. Ensure compliance with accounting principles, regulations, and company policies.
  • Standard Costing: Update material, labor and overhead costs annually and maintain the standard costing system throughout the year. Monitor and analyze standard cost variances and recommend corrective actions.
  • Project Accounting:  Capture costs and recognize revenue utilizing the percentage of completion method of accounting and provide the information to execute project profitability analysis.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with other departments, such as production, procurement, and engineering, to gather cost-related information and provide financial insights. Participate in cross-functional projects to improve cost efficiency.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvement and automation in cost accounting procedures. Implement best practices and leverage technology to enhance accuracy and efficiency.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCEBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA or CMA certification preferred but not required. Experience in cost accounting or a related role preferred. Manufacturing experience is a bonus. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must possess the ability to read, analyze and interpret the English language. Must have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and internal customers (co-workers).  Excellent communication skills are a must.  The ability to work with a wide range of employees including plant, office and management personnel is critical.  Strong professionalism and confidentiality skills are essential.

REASONING ABILITY Must possess the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Must be a broad thinker and be able to conceptualize the effects of changes on products, processes and other departments before those changes are made.  

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Must have strong personal computers skills and be proficient in Microsoft applications. Advanced Excel skills, including data analysis and financial modeling.

ADDITIONAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Costing and/or Product estimating experience
  • Blueprint Reading knowledge and/or experience
  • Proficiency in financial software and ERP systems
