POSITION SUMMARY
The CTSFW Communications Specialist is a creative copywriter and social media manager who works collaboratively with team members and other departments to advance the Seminary’s mission through content that informs and engages Seminary friends and supporters, prospective students, congregations, partner organizations, and the public. The position is full-time and
on-site.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for this position loves working with words and reliably produces clear, accurate, and compelling copy. He/she has a good sense for what makes people tick and is adept at crafting messages that will resonate with particular audiences, whether in words or images in print or social media. He/she is a dependable team player willing to go the extra mile for the team and the people he/she serves. He/she has a strong understanding of the theology and practice of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) and a passion for bringing to life the Seminary’s mission of forming church workers for faithful service here and around the world.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Draft copy for email, the website, RegFox pages (online event pages), brochures, and other marketing pieces; draft articles and stories for the Seminary and departments as assigned; ensure that all messages from the Seminary are engaging, error-free, audience-centered, and true to the Seminary’s voice.
- Manage CTSFW’s Facebook, Instagram, and X accounts, creating and curating engaging content (text, images, and video) that builds support for the Seminary and its mission; plan the content calendar; work with a student assistant (when available) to create event pages, moderate interaction, and respond to queries; contribute to social media strategy; monitor metrics.
- Contribute to event coverage (e.g., photography; reporting); seek out interesting story opportunities.
- Manage the daily CTSFW e-newsletter, Blue News, and the weekly employee
e-newsletter, Campus Connection. - Assist with editing print and digital pieces produced for or by departments on campus, ensuring correctness, clarity, and consistency of voice and branding in all publications and projects.
- Review the CTSFW website, the portal, and CTSFW publications periodically to ensure that information is accurate and up-to-date.
- Assist with larger team projects as assigned (e.g., brand manual and style guide).
- Contribute to team responsibilities including weekly staff meetings, providing feedback on projects, digital asset management, calendar planning, and annual reporting.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in communications, English, journalism, marketing, or a related discipline
- One to three years of experience producing digital content or writing and editing for an organization or business strongly preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Impeccable writing and editing skills
- Able to manage multiple projects effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Strong collaboration and team communication skills
- Excellent judgment
- Strong organizational skills; detail-oriented
- Demonstrated skills in photography; graphic design skills a plus
- Demonstrated understanding of confessional Lutheran theology; supportive of the Seminary’s mission to form servants in Jesus Christ who teach the faithful, reach the lost, and care for all
- Comfortable with Google Workspace and design programs like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite
- Familiarity with Salesforce, email marketing platforms, and/or WordPress a plus
- Able to deal professionally with vendors, media, and all contacts inside and outside the Seminary community
- Able to work occasional evenings and weekends for event coverage
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to sit or stand at a computer up to eight hours a day
- Ability to walk for prolonged periods of time
- Ability to lift up to fifteen pounds
