Extra-Help Vector Control Technician

This is an at-will, full-time, non-exempt, seasonal, and non-benefitted position.
The duration of work is expected to begin in April and end in October (approximately 6 months).
The typical work week is Monday through Thursday 5:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Fridays off.

THE POSITION
Extra-Help Vector Control Technicians act as a layer of support for District activities during times of peak activity. Candidates hired will assist in a variety of functions within the District, working with the Operations Department and/or Surveillance Department. Directed by field supervisors and report to respective department managers.

ABOUT THE OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT
The Operations Department is responsible for implementing mosquito and vector control prevention strategies in the field. Long-term mosquito prevention is accomplished by incorporating Integrated Vector Management methodologies, which uses a combination of applied field techniques involving physical, chemical, and biological control methods. The Operations Department is also responsible for the management, repair, and maintenance of the District's facility and fleet.
ABOUT THE SURVEILLANCE DEPARTMENT
The Surveillance Department is responsible for the surveillance of disease-carrying insects and occurrences of vector-borne diseases, data management, and analysis, as well as technical and data advisory support to develop programs and direct District resources. The disease surveillance program serves as an early warning system in the detection of mosquito-borne viruses that can infect people and animals.
THE SELECTION PROCESS
Applicants possessing the MOST DESIRABLE qualifications at each level, based on a screening of required application materials, including the completed Supplemental Questionnaire, will be invited to continue in the selection process.

- Performs pesticide application with low toxicity in areas where vectors are found or areas conducive to vector activity
- Performs house to house surveys to locate sources of vectors and implements assignments that are planned and organized by supervisors.
- Identifies, removes and/or treats sources of vectors
- Identifies and counts arthropods
- Collects specimens
- Assists in maintenance and repair of building/grounds
- Removes vegetation from sources of vectors
- Operates spray units and automotive equipment
- Operates back tank sprayer to apply pesticides
- Monitors and maintains equipment
- Records work performed
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- General biology and arithmetic.

Education and Experience:
Education:
Completion of the twelfth (12th) grade or equivalent.
Experience:
Experience operating a vehicle safely.
Candidates possessing an equivalent combination of qualifying work experience and education as described above will be considered.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License that must be maintained throughout employment. Must be insurable with the District’s insurance carrier.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be sighted with measurable depth perception; have a minimum of single ear aided hearing; be able to speak and write effectively in English; frequently* operate a motor vehicle; frequently* traverse uneven ground such as fields, dirt banks, stream beds, and shallow ponds; frequently* bend at the knees and waist to inspect sources; regularly* carry a 40 pound sprayer on one's back over uneven surfaces; occasionally* operate specialized equipment such as boats, all-terrain vehicles, and other mechanized equipment; periodically* climb ladders; and periodically* assist in lifting objects overhead weighing more than 60 pounds. * Periodically - Activity or condition exists less than 25% of the time.* Occasionally - Activity or condition exists 25 to 50% of the time.* Regularly - Activity or condition exists 50 to 75% of the time.* Frequently - Activity or condition exists more than 75% of the time.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances, and fumes, dust, and air contaminants, and exposure to vermin, insects, and parasites. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
POST-OFFER BACKGROUND CHECK AND PHYSICAL EXAMINATION
Qualifying candidates must complete a satisfactory background check. Additionally, a medical doctor must certify that a candidate is physically able to perform the duties of the position and is free of illegal substances as determined by a drug screen. A medical doctor and/or laboratory designated by the District shall perform the post-offer physical examination and drug screen and the District shall pay all costs.
