Stone Ridge is seeking a Head of Middle School to begin work in July 2025.

Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, a member of the international Network of Sacred Heart Schools, is a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school for girls, Grades 1-12, with a coeducational Early Childhood Program, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten in Bethesda, Maryland. With over 780 students, and rooted in the Goals of Sacred Heart education, Stone Ridge inspires young women to lead and serve through lives of purpose that integrate faith, intellect, community, social action, and personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom. 

Reporting to the Head of School, the Head of Middle School is responsible for the overall spiritual and academic leadership of the Middle School. The Head of Middle School maintains congruence between the School's mission and all activities and operations of the Middle School, serving as a member of the Administrative, Management, and Academic Leadership Teams. In addition, the Head of Middle School acts as the educational leader of the division, is responsible for its day-to-day operation, and functions as the chief articulator of programs, expectations, behavioral guidelines, and other information necessary to ensure that all constituencies are fully informed.

Working collaboratively with colleagues, the Head of Middle School:

  • Observes and evaluates the faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum.
  • Makes recommendations to the Head of School regarding the hiring, retention, and assignment of faculty.
  • Develops plans for meeting every learner’s needs in conjunction with learning support teams.
  • Oversees and guides the activities of the division.
  • Facilitates co-curricular and extra-curricular activity programs of the division.
  • Assists in the planning and the presentation of school assemblies and programs.
  • Assists in maintaining a comprehensive calendar of school events.
  • Works with the Assistant Head of Middle School to establish guidelines for proper student conduct and dress, maintain student discipline consistent with school policies, monitor students' adherence to established school rules, and maintain accurate records of student attendance and citizenship.
  • Works closely with the Director of Enrollment Management and the Admissions Team to attract, admit, enroll, and retain new students.
  • Maintains regular communication with parents about the life of the division. This includes regular coordination with the Director of Marketing and Communications for key external communications.

The desired candidate will have the following demonstrated experiences or abilities: 

  • Prior experience with leadership in a Catholic school and/or deep knowledge of Catholicism, the Catholic community, the Archdiocese of Washington, and Sacred Heart identity.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to giving life to the school’s mission, including our values around diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and experience designing pedagogy and curriculum from a framework of cultural sensitivity and understanding.
  • A commitment to understanding and ongoing learning around the evolving trends in education, including research around neurodiversity, mental health, and artificial intelligence.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating, supervising, and supporting a diverse faculty with an ability to coach and mentor faculty at all stages of their careers.
  • Meaningful classroom experience(s) in schools, particularly Catholic schools.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically as part of a school’s Administrative Team, particularly around the advancement of curricular initiatives in alignment with broader institutional goals.
  • Teaching experience at the middle school level.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and project-management abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with various stakeholders.
  • Advanced degree in a related field.
  • A candidate with experience in an all-girls’ school is preferred, though not required.

The ideal candidate will have: 

  • A demonstrated understanding of and personal commitment to Catholicism and/or Sacred Heart education.
  • Knowledge of current research and best practices in all-girls’ educational environments.
  • Familiarity with or experience teaching in the model of Understanding by Design, the school’s chosen pedagogical model.
  • A growth mindset and commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • A demonstrated collaborative spirit, organizational skills, and creativity.

The salary range for this position is between $125,000 and $155,000 based on experience. Stone Ridge offers competitive benefits, including health, dental and vision insurances, generous vacation, holiday and sick time, 403(b) contribution, long and short-term disability and life insurance.
