Harris County Leadership Internship Program Intern

Harris County, Commissioner Precinct One is looking for Summer 2025 Interns for the Harris County Leadership Internship Program (HCLIP). HCLIP provides internship opportunities for young adults interested in leadership development, community, and public service careers. As a Public Service Intern through HCLIP, you will immerse yourself in local government programs, policies, and issues as you build professional skills for your future career.

This is a full-time, in-person position located in Harris County, TX. The program runs from June to August 2025. Learn more at hcp1.net/HCLIP.

HCLIP offers internship opportunities in 7 unique pathways/tracks. Within your application, you may apply to one or more of the following pathways:

INTERNSHIP Pathways & GENERAL DUTIES

• Policy & Research
  • Research and analyze policies in Texas and nationally to align with the priorities of the host office or official.
  • Provide research support, memo writing and help identify best practices.
• Community Affairs   
  • Implement responsive public service by engaging residents and stakeholders on policy issues.
  • Communicate policy priorities though inclusive messaging.
• Communications & Marketing
  • Utilize multimedia tools to convey important messages to residents and stakeholders.
  • Copy writing, editing, press relations and social media.
• Forensics
  • Apply chemistry, biology, and scientific methods skills to assist the Medical Examiner Service and Crime Laboratory at Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences (HCIFS).
  • Assist with development of scientific procedures and validation of instruments to examine and analyze evidence.
• Technology & Data Analysis
  • Use coding, technical and cloud-based programs to support operations. ·
  • Manage database, significant data, provide analysis or graphics.
• Senior Programs (Adults 50+)
  • Implement educational programs and recreation to keep seniors active and engaged in their community.
  • Support event set-up, information gathering and provide a social outlet for seniors.
• Youth Education
  • Support, nurture and teach children ages 5 to 12 in summer enrichment.
  • Engage in sports, games, recreation, outdoor learning, conservation, field trips, core academic support and/or creative arts and fun with youth.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Must be at least 18 years old by the start of program
• Must be a student enrolled for the current academic year (Fall 2024 and Spring 2025) in a college, university, or dual credit program with at least 12 credits earned towards a degree
• Cannot be on academic probation
• Must be eligible to work in the United States

• Ability to interact with various stakeholders and community members using either written or verbal methods
• Ability to follow direction and work in collaboration with all levels of management, staff, and other departments
• Maintain a consistent professional appearance and demeanor
• Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks to meet goals and objectives
• General knowledge and skills relevant to your desired Internship Track(s)

About Harris County Precinct One

There are four precincts in Harris County. The four elected commissioners, along with an elected county judge, serve as members of Harris County Commissioners Court, the administrative head of the county’s government.

With approximately 1.1 million residents, Harris County Precinct One is a diverse, urban precinct that covers 363 square miles. Precinct One’s multi-racial, multi-ethnic population is roughly 39 percent African American, 37 percent Latino, 18 percent Anglo, 5 percent Asian, and 1 percent other.

Precinct One, which includes 876 miles of road, stretches south to Brazoria County and reaches into eastern and northern sections of Harris County. The Precinct’s territory includes a large section of Downtown Houston, including the Downtown Harris County Courthouse Complex, Toyota Center, Minute Maid Park, and the BBVA Compass Stadium. Other notable landmarks include the 263-acre NRG Park Complex and the renowned Texas Medical Center. The Precinct is also the higher educational home to Houston Community College, Rice University, Texas Southern University, the University of Houston, and the University of St. Thomas. Precinct One manages more than 20 parks, 11 community centers, numerous hike-and-bike trails, three maintenance service centers, and several area offices, all of which provide an array of services to Precinct One residents.
