Camp Counselor

Camp Counselor – Seasonal

 

Rate: $11.25/hour – starting rate based on prior experience and education

 

Location: Various locations within Lake Metroparks, will be assigned to work for one location. If a specific position desired, please indicate your top three choices/locations that we may direct your application and/or interest.

 

Position Description:  

The Camp Counselor provides leadership, supervision, and safety for small groups (sized 8-30) while participating in outdoor nature/science-related, art or active skill-oriented activities.

Depending on location, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Children’s Schoolhouse Nature Park
    • Provides leadership, supervision, and safety for groups (sized 15-20 of children ages 7-11) while participating in indoor and outdoor activities. 
    • Assists in the development of nature related activities, conducts camp games, provides supervision at camper’s lunch time, presents nature/related camp activities, maintains attendance records for campers, and leads off-site field trips.
    • Assists in instruction of canoeing, swimming, fishing, pond dipping, kayaking, art, survival skills, and archery.
  • Environmental Learning Center and Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park
    • Provides leadership, supervision, and safety for groups (sized 12-20 of children at ages 6-10, 11-16) of nature/science-related or boat/beach related activities. 
    • Assists in instruction of canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, swimming, fishing, kayaking, art, survival skills, science experiments, archery, and power boating. 
    • Provides supervision for campers during camp and at lunchtime; maintains records, parent sign in and sign out forms and other assigned paperwork; and leads/supervises off-site field trips.
  • Farmpark
    • Provides leadership, supervision, and safety for groups (sized 10-40 of children ages 4-12) while participating in indoor and outdoor farm-related activities. 
    • Assists in the development of farm related activities, conducts camp type games, provides supervision at camper’s lunch time, presents farm related camp activities, maintains attendance records for campers, and leads off-site field trips.
  • Helps provide supervision and training for Youth Volunteers.
  • Performs duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Prior experience working with children preferred. 

 

Position Requirements: 

  • Knowledge of natural and cultural history of Ohio.
  • Excellent presentation and verbal and written communications skills. 
  • Must be comfortable speaking in public in front of small and large groups.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for working with families and children of all ages.
  • Ability to effectively oversee children grades 1-8.
  • Ability to establish a healthy rapport with children. 
  • Ability to stimulate interest and excitement about program subject and the park district in visitors and other staff.
  • Ability to interact with others with tact and courtesy and maintain integrity and appropriate behavior in dealing with conflicts and challenges with the public, co-workers, and managers.
  • Proficiency in computer software programs including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Variable work schedule, up to 40 hours per week.
  • May be occasionally required to work flexible hours, weekends, evenings and holidays.
  • Must possess a valid drivers’ license and insurable on the Agency’s liability policy. Pre-employment background check required.
