TWC Law Clerk - Intern - UI Appeals

The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), Appeals Department (Appeals), is seeking one law school student for a paid Summer Internship Program (SIP) that includes multiple educational and personal growth opportunities. The 2025 SIP is a dynamic opportunity that offers insight into a number of specialized departments including: Appeals, Office of General Counsel (OGC), and our three Commissioner's offices. This year's program will allow participants to gain experience and practice alongside attorneys at TWC. An end of program presentation, which includes participants from across the agency, will allow individuals to share their experience and offer suggestions into TWC's mission and growth.

The 2025 SIP is a hybrid mix of teleworking and in-office work, which runs from June 2, 2025, through August 8, 2025. Appeals Department participants will be required to work at the TWC Main Office, located adjacent to the Texas State Capitol in Austin, TX, at least two days (Tuesday and Wednesday) each week.

Who We Are:

The Texas Workforce Commission is a dynamic state agency with over 4500 employees helping the state's economy grow by connecting people with jobs.

The Appeals department holds and hears first level appeals from an original determination   in disputed claims for unemployment insurance benefits. Interns will have an opportunity to work beside other attorneys to learn the laws used in preparing decisions; observe actual hearings; hold one-party hearings and draft decisions. Networking with other legal interns, you'll be introduced to various services provided by or through the Commission by teams in Open Records, HR Legal, Litigation, Policy, Contracts and Rule Making; while interns in our commissioner's offices will reflect on their collaboration with staff preparing materials for internal and external distribution and reviewing and researching cases for a weekly docket.

 What You'll Do:

Interns will be introduced to the Texas Workforce Commission's corporate culture by attending Commissioner's meetings and participating in conferences and department meetings. Several educational opportunities are planned to help participants from all departments network and gain meaningful insight into interpersonal communication styles and skills. Once familiar with the agency, you'll work with your supervisor to decide what topic most interests you and begin research on an end of summer presentation.

What You'll Earn:

TWC Internships are full or part-time, temporary positions that cannot be filled for more than twenty-four weeks. The internship pays $2,600 per month at a full-time status and comes with some benefits.

What You'll Learn:

Interns can expect to walk away with a broad view of the work performed by attorneys in Appeals, OGC, our commissioner's offices and other areas within the agency. They will also leave with hands-on experience in several different areas of the law.
