Assistant Director of Special Services

Qualifications:

  1. Valid Arkansas Building Administrator License
  2. Previous building and/or district leadership experience with evidence of effective facilitation of RTI/MTSS for academics, behavior, mental health, etc.
  3. Special Education Administrator license, or progress towards, preferred

Job Description

The Assistant Director of Special Services position requires the organization and administration of special services for district students. The Assistant Director, under the direction of the Director of Special Services, ensures that a variety of educational services and supports are provided according to local policy, state and federal regulations. The Assistant Director, under the direction of the Director of Special Services and Director of Mental Health and Behavior Services, will co-lead facilitation of a multi-tiered system of support in all schools, including Response to Intervention for academics, behavior, and mental health.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Under the direction of district leadership:

Special Services Leadership

  • Ensure accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations
  • Communicate and carry out the goals of the Special Services Director and the Special Services Department
  • Contribute as a team member of various school and district teams including Cabinet, District Guiding Coalition, and Student Intervention Teams, as directed
  • Assist with district systems for transition and career readiness of students with disabilities
  • Assist building administrators in ensuring that substitutes have all necessary information and support related to student Individualized Education Plans for effective instruction
  • As required by the Director, maintain a caseload of students in a teacher’s absence or for students served off campus (i.e., Homebound, ALE, Day Treatment Facility)
  • Model exceptional communication and conferencing skills for teachers, related service providers, and building administrators
  • Coordinate and conduct Functional Behavioral Assessments with building behavior teams
  • Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate concerns and/or directing appropriate personnel for resolution
  • Follow state, district, and school policies and expectations
  • Other duties as assigned

Student Services

  • Schedule and hold conferences with individual teachers and related services providers regarding necessary changes, to monitor progress, and schedule follow-up as needed
  • Monitor caseloads of teachers/speech-language pathologists
  • Assist in student scheduling
  • Communicate with administrators, teachers, and parents regarding student progress
  • Actively participate on content and/or grade-level team(s) within the school
  • Assist teachers and related service providers with developing and administering content-specific assessments for the purpose of assessing student growth and proficiency levels.
  • Guide the learning process to ensure individual student growth and progress towards learning objectives and curriculum goals
  • Assist with the coordination and supervision of extended school year services

Alternative Learning Environment (ALE)

  • Lead the effective facilitation of the district’s alternative learning environments
  • Facilitate collaboration among ALE staff, including professional development, team meetings, etc.
  • Lead parent conferences for students receiving ALE services
  • Ensure accurate completion of required documentation such as placement, data collection, goal setting/action plans, etc., and ensure implementation of all ALE components
  • Support implementation of behavior intervention plans
  • Support implementation of academic, curricular, mental health, and behavior supports
  • Lead determination of appropriate incentives for individual students

Inclusive Practices

  • Co-lead implementation of effective inclusive practice systems
  • Progress monitors inclusive practices in schools and classrooms
  • Provide professional development and other support for inclusive practices
  • Assist in master scheduling and individual student scheduling

Due Process

  • Ensure that all schools in the Greenbrier School District follow all state and federal regulations relative to the identification, placement, and program development for students within MTSS, including but not limited to students with disabilities
  • Provide system-wide leadership in matters relating to due process procedural safeguards
  • Ensure accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations
  • Assist with the administration of state and district-wide assessments for students with disabilities

Professional Development

  • Assist the Director of Special Services in professional development programs and activities
  • Facilitate collaboration among ALE staff, including professional development, team meetings, etc.
  • Provide professional development and other support for inclusive practices
  • Complete Science of Reading requirements and model best practices
  • Instruct teachers on developing and/or implementing progress monitoring/multi-tiered supports that monitor and promote students' growth (academic/social/behavior) and report monitoring data
  • Train teachers and other special education staff in the district’s IEP/504 management software
