The Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (SSRAA) is recruiting for a full-time Research and Evaluation (R&E) Manager in Ketchikan, Alaska. SSRAA is a private non-profit hatchery association whose mission is to enhance and rehabilitate salmon production in southern Southeast Alaska. The R&E Manager acts as the lead fisheries biologist for the association and is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all aspects of data collection and management. This is a senior management position that reports directly to the General Manager.
The primary duties of this position include overseeing the port sampling and coded wire tagging program of chum, coho, and Chinook salmon produced by SSRAA hatcheries. This role involves developing statistical protocols for research and evaluation, forecasting returns, analyzing data, and preparing reports for the SSRAA Board of Directors, as well as state and federal agencies. As a member of the senior management team, the R&E Manager will represent SSRAA at relevant planning, technical, and resource management meetings. This position supervises three full-time employees and up to six seasonal employees and is responsible for developing and maintaining the annual budget for the R&E department, as well as overseeing the otolith, pathology, and DEC water analysis labs.
The ideal candidate must hold at least a bachelor’s degree in biology, fisheries, or statistics, with a master’s degree preferred. Desired skills and experience include a strong understanding of statistical protocols, familiarity with Alaska salmon fisheries, excellent verbal and written communication abilities, and proficiency in software programs such as R, Excel, Access, and Word. The salary range for this position is $82,255 to $92,579 per year, depending on experience.
