The Drone Mosquito Technician:
Metropolitan Mosquito Control prides itself on being a technological leader in mosquito abatement. As a UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) technician you will be able to utilize unmanned aircraft to conduct wetland treatments and wetland surveys. You will use district vehicles and equipment to perform the vital functions of our integrated pest management program. You will be working outdoors and experience some awesome natural environments. Becoming a UAS technician is a fantastic opportunity for those interested in gaining experience in unmanned aviation and an introduction into innovating technologies.
Hiring starts in February running through the season with flexible start and end dates. The season begins in the spring and usually ends in fall.

Salary: $17.00 -$22.10 per hour

As a technician you will:
• Survey for and control mosquitoes that transmit diseases
• Educate the public regarding all aspects of District programs, with emphasis on ways to reduce risk of mosquito and tick-borne diseases.
• Survey for and control nuisance causing mosquitoes and biting gnats.
• Monitor deer tick populations and provide public education regarding Lyme and other tick-borne diseases

Unmanned Aircraft Systems Drone Mosquito Technician
Brief Definition
To promote health and well-being by protecting the public from disease and annoyance caused by mosquitoes, gnats (black flies), and ticks in an environmentally safe manner. Working outdoors under general direction, locate and treat mosquito and black fly larval habitats, and perform surveillance of deer ticks according to District guidelines.
Essential Duties
Responsibilities include:
Locating and assessing the safest approach to treating individual mosquito habitats via drone
Coordinate with Supervisors to determine where and when drone treatments will take place.
Oversee small crew of Mosquito Technicians who aid in ground operations and act as Visual Observers.
Locating, sampling, and treating mosquito larvae habitats including wetlands, and water-holding containers.
Calculating proper dosage and applying granular pesticides to larval habitats.
Documenting all field activities and insecticide use on paper and in our data base via smart phone app.
Communicating effectively with coworkers and the public.
Promoting a diverse, culturally competent, and respectful workplace.
Occasionally duties include:
Collecting adult mosquito samples and occasionally operating ULV (ultra-low volume) sprayers.
Helping load control material into helicopters for aerial treatment of large wetlands.
Picking up tires that may be breeding mosquitoes for recycling.
Sampling and treating larval black fly populations in rivers and streams.
Sampling for deer tick populations.
Participating in outreach activities like county and state fair information booths or parades.
Performing other job-related duties as required or directed.
Employment Standards
Experience:
Flying UAS aircraft, such as Mavic Pro, Phantom IV or PV-22
Using UAS software, including DJI, Drone Deploy or Precision Vision interfaces
Acting as Remote Pilot in Command for UAS operations
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Possess or can obtain Federal Aviation Administration Part 107 UAS license within 4 weeks of the start date.
Possess or can obtain MN Dept. of Agriculture Aerial Applicator license (Category B) within 4 weeks of the start date.
Obtain a MN pesticide applicator license Category A and L).
Know safety protocols and proper emergency procedures for UAS operations.
Understand FAA regulations including airspace restrictions and notification requirements.
Ability to troubleshoot software or hardware issues associated with UAS aircraft.
Ability to learn mosquito control methods.
Perform math and understand units of measure.
Perform moderately demanding physical activities.
Learn and perform operation of District vehicles and mosquito control equipment.
Follow all District and OSHA safety requirements.
Be at least 18 of age.
Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
MMCD has predetermined that all seasonal classification positions are six (6) months or less in duration.
Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions on wet and uneven terrain. Move and transport up to 50 pounds occasionally and/or use force frequently or constantly to manipulate, lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Certain work involves bike riding. Some sedentary work involves maintaining a stationary position. Jobs are sedentary if moving is required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met. Incumbents will be subjected to outdoor work and operation of District vehicles and equipment.
