Church Choir Director

Job Title: Church Choir Director

Reports To: Lead Pastor 
Employment Status: Part-Time 

 

Position Summary

St. Andrew’s Church is seeking a passionate and skilled Choir Director to lead and develop the church’s music ministry. The Choir Director will work collaboratively with the pastor, musicians, and congregation to enhance worship through inspiring and meaningful music. This individual will oversee the church choir, plan rehearsals, provide musical direction for Sunday services and special events, and plan special music to enrich the worship experience.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Choir Leadership: Recruit, rehearse, and direct the adult choir and any additional ensembles, ensuring high-quality musical offerings during worship services.
  • Worship Planning: Collaborate with the pastor and worship team to plan and coordinate music for weekly services, special services (e.g., Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter), and other church events. Work with the lead pastor to select sacred music that aligns with worship themes and the liturgical calendar.
  • Special Music Planning: Identify and schedule special music offerings, including instrumentalists, soloists, contemporary praise band, and small ensembles, to enhance worship services.
  • Rehearsals: Schedule and lead weekly choir rehearsals, preparing members for upcoming services and events.
  • Music Selection: Choose appropriate music that aligns with the church’s liturgical calendar, worship themes, and the congregation’s traditions.
  • Administration: Maintain the music library, communicate rehearsal schedules, and manage the choir’s participation in services and events.
  • Musical Group Coordination: Coordinate (and lead as needed) various musical groups, including male and female choir groups. 

 

Qualifications

  • A deep love for sacred music and a commitment to enhancing worship through music.
  • Proven experience directing choirs or other musical ensembles.
  • Proficiency in reading music and conducting.
  • Ability to play the piano or other key instruments.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and encourage choir members of varying skill levels.
  • Flexibility and creativity in working with musicians and worship teams.
  • Knowledge of traditional church music.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music, Choral Conducting, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Familiarity with United Methodist liturgy and worship traditions.
  • Ability to read music.
  • Experience leading a bell choir or a willingness to learn.
  • Some knowledge of contemporary church music.
