About the Department

The Strategy, Planning and Analytics Department works collaboratively with each department across the organization to support strategy formulation, growth plan execution, and project implementation. The team provides the organization with in-depth analytical support in evaluating existing operations and new business opportunities. They help lead and advise cross-functional project teams in executing the many action items and special projects that have been designed to help NYRR continue to reach its strategic objectives.

About the Internship

The New York Road Runners Internship Program is a paid, 21-week experience spanning from Monday, June 16, 2025 to Friday, November 14, 2025, in which interns will learn from the best in the non-profit business.

 

Interns will work collaboratively with professionals in their field of study and will have opportunities to network across the organization. The program will include professional development events and a chance to make a direct impact on the communities in New York City by working select events. Interns will receive onboarding and training to learn about NYRR and gain the knowledge needed to best perform in their role.

The Planning and Project Management Intern will report to the Director of Planning and Project Management and will assist the team in their day-to-day responsibilities leading cross-functional projects and operations designed to help NYRR reach its strategic objectives.

Intern Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties):

  • Support the planning and operations team on a variety of projects including the planning of major marquee events (including the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon) and key organizational cross-functional initiatives (including 2026 Race Calendar Planning, Inclusivity & Accessibility Enhancements, etc.)
  • Assist project managers with their responsibilities, including collecting and organizing data, connecting with internal stakeholders, developing and maintaining key cross-departmental workplans, and monitoring project progress and risks.
  • Assist operations planning associates in the set-up and monitoring of weekly race event registration, marquee event demand and allocations, and additional race data points.
  • Use various project management tools in each aspect of a project lifecycle from initiation to the final deliverables.
  • Work with the strategy and analytics members of the team to ensure alignment on workstreams.

Internship Schedule

Interns are expected to work 25 hours weekly, Monday to Friday, in a hybrid work setting. This role will also have weekend work (Saturdays or Sundays) to support NYRR events. Dates will be determined at the start of the internship and availability will be taken into account.

Internship Requirements:

  • Sophomore or Junior in college, working towards a degree in planning, project management, business, or a related field.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Other Requirements:

  • Able to handle responsibility for multiple tasks across various projects and operations
  • Interest in learning about project management methodologies and the lifecycle of a project
  • Able to analyze an issue and work with team members to develop creative solutions
  • Interest in sports (especially running!) and an appreciation for the value of physical fitness a plus
  • The ability to be outside in the elements for the duration of event shifts
