About the Department
The Marketing and Communications Department set our brand tone. They construct and magnify stories and messages to help and inspire people through running, across advertising, media, brand strategy, creative materials, video, photography, race broadcasts, editorial, brand presentations, and multiple web and digital platforms. They connect with the world's best athletes and ambassadors to deepen NYRR's mission. They leverage channels ranging from international broadcasts to screens at our NYRR RUNCENTER, individual emails to mass media, and from digital journeys to race day signage. The Marketing and Communications team connects NYRR's initiatives and innovations to the hearts and minds of our community, inspiring them to run for life.
The NYRR Photography & Video Team oversees the production and distribution of all NYRR event photography and video capture, including video production oversight and support for livestreams. This dynamic team blends extensive logistical planning with creative photography and video production to ensure NYRR’s brand is showcased across all facets of the organization. This work spans events large and small, including the globally recognized TCS New York City Marathon, New Balance 5th Avenue Mile, and United Airlines NYC Half. Additionally, the team works with internal and external stakeholders to service photography and video needs, including digital content series, livestreams, and event content creation. The Photo & Video team works within the NYRR Content Team, collaborating with Broadcast, Experiential Production, Digital, Brand, and Studio.
About the Internship
The New York Road Runners Internship Program is a paid, 21-week experience spanning from Monday, June 16, 2025 to Friday, November 14, 2025, in which interns will learn from the best in the non-profit business.
Interns will work collaboratively with professionals in their field of study and will have opportunities to network across the organization. The program will include professional development events and a chance to make a direct impact on the communities in New York City by working select events. Interns will receive onboarding and training to learn about NYRR and gain the knowledge needed to best perform in their role.
The Photography intern will aid in execution of start to finish workflow for program related events throughout the year, including Rising NYRR, Striders, Open Run, and Group Training. The intern will be integrated into the process of shot list creation, image culling, and metadata application for searchability within the DAM. The intern will gain insight into the varied functions of image assets within a non-profit organization, as well as Lightroom, Bridge, and Photoshop skills.
Intern Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties):
- Creation of photo shot lists, including details on what a photographer must capture and where to capture it, file naming conventions, deliverable details, and invoicing information.
- Exercise creative judgement in culling/selecting top images to represent the event or program throughout the year.
- Application of specific metadata and keywords for Digital Asset Management (DAM) searchability.
- Photo editing for composition, crop, exposure as needed
Internship Schedule
Interns are expected to work 25 hours weekly, Monday to Friday, in a hybrid work setting. This role will also have weekend work (Saturdays or Sundays) to support NYRR events. Dates will be determined at the start of the internship and availability will be taken into account.

Internship Requirements:
- Sophomore or junior in college, working towards a degree in photography, media, communications, or a related field.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
- Strong attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Other Requirements:
- Basic working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Cloud, specifically Adobe Bridge and Lightroom preferred.
- Basic photography skills preferred.
- Knowledge of photographic techniques including lighting and composition preferred.
- The ability to be outside in the elements for the duration of event shifts
